Chapter 12

Grace did not cry.
That frightened Damon.
She sat in the west guest suite with both hands over her stomach.
Still.
Too still.
Damon sat across from her.
No commands.
No “calm down.”
No promise that everything was fine.
It wasn't.
Finally Grace spoke.
“They wanted my baby.”
“Yes.”
“If you died.”
“Yes.”
“What if you didn’t?”
Damon hesitated.
Grace looked at him.
“Tell me.”
“Leverage.”
Her face tightened.
“Against you.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
Grace looked toward the bracelet.
“My mother knew people like this.”
Damon said nothing.
“She told me powerful families don’t always hurt you by attacking.”
“They make you dependent.”
“She said the worst people give you food with one hand and count every bite with the other.”
Damon thought of Vanessa.
Grace continued.
“I thought Mom was talking about employers.”
“She was talking about everyone.”
Maybe.
Damon leaned forward.
“You don’t owe me anything because the baby is mine.”
Grace looked up.
He continued.
“You choose where you live.”
“Who stays near you.”
“What you want from me.”
Her eyes filled.
“You’re not going to decide?”
“No.”
She almost laughed.
“You’re a Mafia boss.”
“I’m aware.”
“That sounds difficult for you.”
“Extremely.”
For the first time, she smiled.
Small.
Then disappeared.
“What happens to Vanessa?”
“Not your burden.”
Grace shook her head.
“No.”
Damon frowned.
“She made it mine.”
Fair.
Grace continued.
“I don’t want her dead.”
Damon said nothing.
“I want her to understand she didn’t make me disappear.”
That answer mattered.
Downstairs, Marcus had started talking.
Not because he regretted anything.
Because Vanessa blamed him for Margaret’s death.
He wanted to blame back.
Charles listened.
Damon joined later.
Marcus sat at the table.
No arrogance now.
Only bitterness.
“She planned the grave.”
Charles stared.
“What?”
“Today.”
Marcus looked toward Vanessa.
“She told me Grace would come.”
Vanessa said nothing.
“She wanted the bracelet.”
“We know.”
“No.”
Marcus laughed.
“You know she wanted the key.”
He looked at Damon.
“You don’t know why today.”
Damon waited.
Marcus continued.
“Margaret’s birthday.”
Grace had said that.
“Yes.”
“Vanessa thought grief would make Grace easier.”
Cruel.
Calculated.
“Humiliate her at the grave.”
“Make her emotional.”
“Take the bracelet.”
Charles looked sick.
Marcus continued.
“And if Grace fought?”
He shrugged.
“Blame pregnancy.”
Vanessa snapped:
“You agreed.”
“I did.”
Honest.
Then:
“But the slap?”
He smiled.
“That was her.”
Vanessa glared.
Marcus continued.
“She likes pain when there’s an audience.”
Damon looked at Vanessa.
She said nothing.
Marcus leaned back.
“She also likes people watching.”
Then:
“Ask about the cemetery cameras.”
Damon’s expression hardened.
Cross guards checked.
The family mausoleum cameras covered part of the path.
One additional hidden camera had been mounted near Margaret’s grave.
Not Cross.
Not cemetery security.
Private.
A feed.
Where did it transmit?
They traced it.
To a Caldwell estate tablet.
Vanessa’s room.
She had planned to record Grace’s humiliation too.
Another edited story.
Another weapon.
Damon looked at her.
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“People believe what they see.”
Grace appeared in the doorway.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
She wore the silver bracelet.
Her voice was steady.
“They believe what people like you cut out.”
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
May you like
Grace stepped into the room.
For the first time, she came toward Vanessa without being called.
