Chapter 1

My husband slapped me because he believed I couldn't feel it.
That was his first mistake.
The second was doing it in front of our son.
“Twelve days, Emily.”
Ryan leaned over my hospital bed.
His wedding ring caught the light.
His smile was almost affectionate.
“Even your own body abandoned you.”
Then his palm struck my face.
Pain flashed through my jaw.
I didn't move.
Not yet.
Ryan picked up my family signet ring from the bedside table.
The ring my father gave me when I took control of the Carter organization six years earlier.
He dropped it onto my chest.
“There.”
His voice turned mocking.
“Something for you to wear while the adults fix what you broke.”
My fingers remained still beneath the blanket.
Across the suite, Ethan clutched a smartphone against his sweater.
Four years old.
Too frightened to cry.
Claire saw it.
My sister's smile disappeared.
“What do you have?”
Ethan backed away.
“Nothing.”
Claire grabbed his wrist.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
She pulled harder.
My son's face twisted with pain.
“Ethan.”
Her voice became sweet.
Fake sweet.
“Aunt Claire isn't asking twice.”
He jerked away.
Then said the words I had been waiting for.
“Mom told me to record you.”
Ryan stopped smiling.
Claire stopped breathing.
Silence.
Then Ryan moved.
Fast.
He crossed the room and shoved Ethan aside.
My son hit the padded bench.
“Daddy!”
Ryan reached for the phone.
That was enough.
My hand closed around his wrist.
Ryan froze.
I opened my eyes.
Claire whispered:
“Ryan…”
Her face had gone white.
“She heard us.”
I sat up.
Pain tore through my ribs.
Didn't matter.
Ryan swung.
I slipped sideways, blocked his arm and put one punch across his face.
He crashed backward into the meal trolley.
Trays flew.
Plastic cups bounced across the floor.
Water spilled over the tiles.
Claire screamed.
Then she grabbed the heavy leather folder from the visitor bench and threw it.
It struck my shoulder.
She ran toward Ethan.
I stepped between them.
One kick sent her backward into the privacy screen.
Curtains folded around her.
Linen baskets overturned.
Then silence.
Ethan ran to me.
I crouched despite the pain.
“Come here.”
He pressed himself against me.
I took the phone.
The recording was still playing.
Ryan's voice.
Recorded earlier.
“If the brake line had been cut deeper, she wouldn't be lying there.”
My blood went cold.
Then Claire:
“Stop saying it like that. Gavin did exactly what you told him.”
Ryan:
“She was supposed to go over the bridge.”
I looked at my husband.
His face changed.
Not guilt.
Fear.
I walked toward him.
“You cut my brakes.”
He said nothing.
“Now tell me who else knew.”
Ryan stared.
Claire struggled beneath the collapsed screen.
Then Ryan smiled.
Even now.
“You've been awake thirty seconds and you're already giving orders.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
I held up Ethan's phone.
“I've been awake much longer than that.”
Ryan's smile vanished.

And for the first time, he understood something important.
My twelve days of silence had not all belonged to him.
