Chapter 14

Victor called it containment.
Of course he did.
Not imprisonment.
Containment.
“Suppose you survived.”
He stood calmly near the window.
“Suppose you woke confused.”
“I wasn't.”
“Suppose.”
“No.”
His jaw tightened.
I continued.
“You don't get to build your defense from imaginary weakness.”
He stared.
Claire almost smiled.
I looked at her.
“What was the hospital plan?”
She shrugged.
“You already saw room fourteen.”
“That was part.”
Ryan finally spoke.
“Victor wanted her declared unstable.”
Nathan stiffened.
I turned.
“How?”
Ryan looked at the doctor.
Nathan went pale.
Victor said:
“Nathan was never involved.”
Interesting.
“He was supposed to be removed.”
Nathan stared.
“What?”
Victor ignored him.
“A replacement physician.”
“Who?”
“Doesn't matter.”
“It does to me.”
Victor smiled.
“Then ask Malcolm.”
Malcolm laughed bitterly.
“No.”
Victor turned.
Malcolm continued.
“You're not hanging another piece on me.”
There.
Even cowards get tired of being used.
Malcolm looked at me.
“Dr. Owen Pierce.”
Nathan's face changed.
I knew Pierce.
Private specialist.
Expensive.
Ambitious.
Not family.
Perfect.
“What was he supposed to say?”
Malcolm answered.
“Brain injury.”
“Meaning?”
“Impaired judgment.”
Ryan added:
“Paranoia.”
Claire smiled.
“Which would've been easy once you started accusing your husband and sister of murder.”
I stared.
There.
Elegant.
If I woke too early and accused them—
proof of instability.
If I stayed unconscious—
Ryan kept command.
If I recovered slowly—
Victor took control through council.
Every outcome funneled away from me.
I almost admired the architecture.
Almost.
“What about Ethan?”
Victor answered.
“He would've stayed with Ryan initially.”
Ryan looked at him.
“Initially?”
Victor didn't even glance over.
Then Claire laughed.
“Still surprised?”
Ryan stared at Victor.
I did too.
“Then where?”
Victor said:
“My estate.”
Ryan's face went white.
“You said he stays with me.”
Victor looked at him.
“You tried to kill his mother.”
Ryan actually looked offended.
I almost laughed.
Victor continued.
“You weren't suitable long-term.”
The hypocrisy was magnificent.
Ryan stepped forward.
“You used me.”
Victor shrugged.
“You were useful.”
Claire whispered:
“Same word.”
Yes.
Same word Mother used in the prior story? irrelevant, but within this story could echo.
I looked at Ryan.
“Now you understand how Ethan felt.”
He stared.
“What?”
“Useful when quiet.”
His face changed.
Good.
I turned to Victor.
“What happens to Claire?”
He smiled.
“She talks too much.”
Claire's face hardened.
“And Malcolm?”
Victor glanced.
“Old.”
Malcolm laughed.
There was no joy in it.
“That's it?”
Victor looked at him.
“What more would you like?”
Everyone had finally reached the same conclusion.
Victor had built the plan with disposable people.
Ryan's ambition.
Claire's resentment.
Malcolm's nostalgia.
Gavin's access.
None were partners.
All were tools.
I looked at the capos.
“You wanted stability.”
Victor interrupted.
“They do.”
I continued.
“Then look.”
I pointed one by one.
“My husband tried to kill me.”
Ryan looked away.
“My sister helped.”
Claire stared.
“My father's friend coordinated it.”
Malcolm's face tightened.
“My security chief cut the line.”
Gavin shrugged.
“And Victor planned to imprison me if I survived.”
Silence.
I looked at Frank.
“Does this look stable?”
“No.”
Another capo:
“No.”
Then another.
Victor's face remained calm.
But his hands had tightened.
I noticed.
Good.
I slipped off my signet ring.
Ryan's eyes lifted.
Claire stared.
Victor smiled faintly.
I placed it on the table.
Then said:
“If any man in this room believes being a mother disqualifies me…”
Silence.
“…take it.”
Nobody moved.
Victor's smile weakened.
I continued.
“If you believe Ryan should lead, take it.”
Nothing.
“If you believe Victor should lead…”
I pushed the ring toward him.
“Take it.”
Victor stared.
Nobody moved beside him.
Not one capo.
Not Frank.
Not Malcolm.
Even Ryan stayed still.
Victor looked around.
His face changed.
Not fear.
Humiliation.
The thing men like him hate more.
I picked up the ring.
Put it back on.
“Good.”
Then Ethan's voice came from the doorway.
“Mom?”
Every head turned.
He stood beside Nathan.
Sleepy.
Scared.
I immediately went to him.
Victor laughed.
There.
One last attempt.
“Perfect.”
I turned.
He smiled.
“Prove my point.”
I looked down at Ethan.
“What point?”
“That everything stops when he calls.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
Victor's smile widened.
Then I looked at the room.
“And not one man here followed you while I answered him.”
Silence.
His smile disappeared.
I picked Ethan up.
His arms went around my neck.
Victor stared.
I looked at him over my son's shoulder.
“You thought love pulled me away from power.”
“No.”
I tightened my hold on Ethan.
“It showed everyone what I use power for.”
The capos understood.
May you like
Victor finally did too.
And for the first time that night, the man who had planned every version of my removal had no version left.
