Chapter 13

Victor Hale was exactly as I remembered.
Gray hair.
Perfect suit.
Calm eyes.
A man who never raised his voice because other people did it for him.
He entered my hospital suite.
Looked at me.
Then smiled.
“Emily.”
I stayed seated.
“Victor.”
His eyes moved toward Ryan.
Claire.
Malcolm.
Gavin.
All under guard.
He sighed.
“You've had a busy evening.”
I almost laughed.
“You sound disappointed.”
“I sound relieved you're alive.”
“No.”
His smile thinned.
“Still difficult.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“Tell her the truth.”
Victor looked at her.
“Claire.”
She smiled.
“What?”
“You talk too much.”
Her face twisted.
“Gavin said the same thing.”
Victor looked at Gavin.
“Gavin also won't be working tomorrow.”
Gavin laughed.
“None of us will.”
I watched Victor.
No panic.
No denial.
Interesting.
“Did you order Malcolm to remove me?”
“No.”
Malcolm's head snapped toward him.
Victor continued.
“I told him the organization needed options.”
Malcolm stared.
“You told me she was finished.”
Victor looked at him.
“After the warehouse failure, perhaps she should have been.”
There.
Not denial.
Just phrasing.
I leaned back.
“You wanted me gone.”
“I wanted stability.”
“Same word everyone uses.”
“Because it matters.”
He looked around.
“Your father understood.”
“My father chose me.”
Victor's smile tightened.
“Yes.”
There.
Old resentment.
“Over you?”
Silence.
Ryan almost smiled.
Victor ignored him.
I continued.
“You thought you should have been head.”
“I thought experience mattered.”
“And my father disagreed.”
“He chose his daughter.”
“No.”
I stared.
“He chose the person he trusted.”
Victor's eyes hardened.
Good.
Claire laughed softly.
“Careful, Victor.”
He turned.
She smiled.
“She bites harder awake.”
I looked at Victor.
“Did you order the bridge cleanup?”
“No.”
Gavin laughed.
Victor stared at him.
Gavin continued.
“Want me to answer?”
Victor said:
“You already have.”
Gavin shrugged.
“Victor wanted no survivors.”
Ryan went pale again.
Victor's expression didn't change.
“Gavin wants leverage.”
I stared.
“Did you?”
Silence.
Frank, the old capo, spoke from the doorway.
“Answer her.”
Victor looked at him.
Interesting.
The room had shifted.
He no longer owned the audience.
Victor sighed.
“I wanted certainty.”
There.
Not murder.
Certainty.
Always prettier words.
I almost smiled.
“You ordered them followed after the brake failure.”
“Malcolm handled details.”
Malcolm stared.
“You told me no loose ends.”
Victor looked at him.
“And yet here she is.”
Cruel.
Dismissive.
Not even pretending loyalty.
Malcolm's face changed.
He finally understood he was expendable too.
I asked:
“And Ethan?”
Victor looked at me.
“What about him?”
“You wanted him at your house.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He's a Carter.”
“He is my son.”
“Both can be true.”
“No.”
Victor's eyes narrowed.
I continued.
“You wanted a four-year-old who could be shaped.”
He smiled faintly.
“Children adapt.”
There it was again.
Everyone in this conspiracy loved that phrase.
Adapt.
Forget.
Adjust.
As if survival erased damage.
“You planned to tell him I abandoned him.”
Victor shrugged.
“A dead mother can't raise a successor.”
The room went silent.
Even Claire stared at him.
I stood slowly.
“You see a successor.”
“What should I see?”
“A child.”
Victor smiled.
“That is why your father made a mistake.”
The insult landed.
Good.
He continued.
“You turned command into motherhood.”
I stared.
“You say that like protection isn't command.”
“Protection makes people dependent.”
“Cruelty makes them loyal?”
“Fear does.”
I almost laughed.
“No.”
His smile weakened.
“Fear makes them quiet.”
Silence.
“And quiet men are very easy to mistake for loyal ones.”
Frank nodded once.
Victor saw it.
There.
The first crack.
I turned toward the capos.
“Who knew Victor expected Ethan at his house?”
Nobody moved.
Then one hand rose.
Not proudly.
Frank.
“I knew he discussed guardianship.”
My jaw tightened.
“Before my crash?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know why?”
“No.”
Another capo raised his hand.
Then another.
Not participants.
Witnesses to fragments.
Victor had spread pieces.
Never enough for one person to see the plan.
Smart.
I looked at him.
“You compartmentalized everyone.”
He smiled.
“Leadership.”
“No.”
I glanced at the people around him.
“Fear of being known.”
His smile vanished.
Then Claire spoke.
“There is one thing Emily still doesn't know.”
Victor turned sharply.
She smiled.
“Now who talks too much?”
I looked at my sister.
“What?”
Claire stared at Victor.
Then at me.
“The brakes weren't meant to be the final attempt.”
My blood went cold.
Victor's face changed.
Claire continued.
“If the bridge failed…”
She smiled bitterly.
“…they already had a plan for this hospital.”
I looked around room fourteen.
Sedatives.
Locked doors.
Isolation.
May you like
Victor hadn't only planned for me to survive.
He had planned what would happen after I woke.
