Chapter 1

The afternoon sun poured over the manicured backyard, bathing the birthday party in brilliant, vivid light. The colors were almost overwhelmingly bright: pastel pink balloons bobbed against a cloudless blue sky, and crisp white tablecloths draped over the outdoor furniture. Twelve-year-old Bella stood near a towering, brightly frosted cake, her fair, rosy skin glowing in the sunlight as she casually held a wrapped party gift. But beneath the pristine, affluent perfection of the American suburban gathering, a scene of horrifying cruelty was unfolding.

Eleven-year-old Grace sat trapped in a wrought-iron patio chair. Her beautiful, vibrant party dress was already sprinkled with long, uneven strands of her own blonde hair.

Behind her stood her Grandmother, a woman of sixty-four whose elegant cardigan, silk blouse, and tailored trousers belied the ruthless strength in her hands. The older woman’s fair face was set in a mask of icy determination as she pinned Grace’s trembling shoulders firmly against the hard back of the chair.

"No! Please stop cutting my hair!" Grace sobbed in extreme terror. Her voice cracked, echoing over the lively, cheerful pop music playing from the outdoor speakers. She twisted violently, desperately trying to escape the sharp steel blades snapping near her ears, but the Grandmother’s grip was unyielding.

Sabrina, thirty-nine and draped in a vibrant floral blouse, stood in front of the sobbing child. Heavy gold jewelry glinted at her wrists and neck. Her rosy cheeks were flushed, and a vicious, deeply jealous smile twisted her lips as she gripped another thick section of Grace’s side braid.

"This hair suits a poor wretch like you," Sabrina sneered, the contempt in her voice dripping like poison. She brandished the heavy silver scissors, letting the sunlight catch the sharp edges before she sliced through the blonde locks. More hair cascaded down, landing on Grace’s lap and the bright green grass below.

"Why are you doing this?" Grace wailed, staring directly at Sabrina through a blur of hot, frantic tears. "I didn't do anything wrong!"

"You breathed," Sabrina replied coldly, pulling the scissors back to admire her jagged handiwork.

Ten-year-old Connor stood a few feet away, practically camouflaged by a towering display of bright floral arrangements. Dressed in a crisp polo shirt and shorts, the boy’s hands shook, but he held a digital tablet perfectly steady. The screen recorded every second of the assault in high definition.

Grandmother tightened her grip, her manicured nails digging painfully into Grace’s collarbone as Sabrina raised the scissors toward the front of the little girl's hairline.

"Hold still," the Grandmother commanded. Her tone was cold, cruel, and entirely dismissive of the child's absolute terror. "It’s only hair. You should be grateful we allow you at this house at all."
