Chapter 10

The cool night air hit Sarah like a physical blow as she scrambled to her feet on the patio. Her arm stung violently, blood soaking the sleeve of her scrubs, but the adrenaline masked the pain. She gripped the red ledger tightly and sprinted across the dark, manicured lawn.
"Guards! Stop her!" Sabrina’s voice shrieked from the broken study window.
Heavy footsteps pounded on the driveway near the front of the estate. The security guards had heard the gunshot and were rushing toward the back gardens. Bright, blinding flashlight beams cut through the darkness, sweeping across the grass.
Sarah dove behind a thick row of rhododendron bushes, pressing herself flat against the cool earth. The flashlight beams swept mere inches over her head. She held her breath, praying the guards wouldn't hear the frantic, deafening thud of her heart.
"She went toward the south wall!" a guard yelled, his heavy boots crunching on the gravel path.
The moment they passed, Sarah broke from her cover. She ran with everything she had, ignoring the burning in her lungs. She reached the tall wrought-iron fence bordering the property. Adrenaline fueled her as she threw the heavy red ledger over the top, then scaled the iron bars, tearing her scrubs and scraping her fair skin against the metal spikes.
She dropped onto the soft dirt on the other side, grabbed the ledger, and ran into the dense thicket of trees where she had hidden her car.
She burst through the tree line, spotting the familiar shape of her weathered sedan parked in the shadows. Relief washed over her like a tidal wave. She had the proof. She had survived.
Sarah grabbed the door handle, yanking it open, and threw herself into the driver's seat. She tossed the red ledger onto the passenger seat and reached for her keys.
"You're bleeding, Sarah."
The voice didn't come from outside the car. It came from the passenger seat.
Sarah screamed, recoiling against the driver's side door.
Sitting in the passenger seat, illuminated only by the faint glow of the dashboard clock, was a man she had never seen before. He was dressed in a tailored, dark suit, his fair skin pale in the shadows. In his hands, he was casually holding her cell phone—the one she had left in the cup holder.
"Who are you?!" Sarah demanded, her voice cracking with terror. She reached frantically for the door handle, but the man moved with terrifying speed, pressing a cold, metallic object against her ribs.
"Don't open that door," the man said. His American accent was smooth, professional, and completely devoid of emotion.
He picked up the red ledger from the seat, flipping it open with one hand.
"Sabrina and the old woman are fools," the man murmured, looking at the banking codes. "They thought they could steal four million dollars from our syndicate and hide it in a shell company without us noticing."
Sarah’s blood ran colder than ice. The shell company. David’s business hadn't just gone bankrupt; it had been involved with organized crime. The Grandmother hadn't just stolen from Grace; she had stolen from the mob.
"You... you aren't the police," Sarah whispered, staring at the man.
"No, Sarah," the man smiled, a terrifying, empty expression in the dark. "I'm the person the police work for. And you just handed me the evidence I need to dismantle your mother-in-law's entire life."
He pocketed her cell phone and leveled a suppressed handgun at her chest.
"Now," the man commanded softly. "Start the car. We have a lot to discuss about your late husband's debts."
