Chapter 5

Sarah stared at the glowing screen of the tablet, the bright video colors reflecting in her wide, horrified eyes. The world outside the car—the bustling diner, the clear blue sky, the warm afternoon sun—felt completely disconnected from the dark, shattering reality she had just uncovered.

Her husband hadn't died in a tragic accident. He had been murdered by his own mother and sister. And the financial ruin that had forced Sarah to work exhausting hospital shifts, the poverty that made them dependent on their abusers, was entirely manufactured.

"Mommy?" Grace’s small, terrified voice broke the silence. "Did Grandma hurt Daddy?"

Sarah quickly turned off the tablet screen, plunging the car into silence. She reached back, grabbing both of Grace’s hands and squeezing them tightly.

"I am so sorry, Grace," Sarah whispered, tears finally breaking free and rolling down her rosy cheeks. "I didn't know. I swear to you, I didn't know."

"What are we going to do, Aunt Sarah?" Connor asked. He looked exceptionally small in the backseat, a ten-year-old boy carrying the weight of a deadly criminal conspiracy. "If we go to the police, Grandmother's lawyers will twist it. She pays the police chief. I heard her brag about it at Thanksgiving."

Connor was right. The family's wealth and influence in the town were absolute. Handing over a video taken by a minor to a corrupt precinct would only get the evidence buried, and likely get Sarah arrested for kidnapping Connor.

"We can't go to the local police," Sarah agreed, her mind racing. The adrenaline from the patio confrontation was hardening into a cold, unbreakable resolve. "We need federal authorities. We need the FBI. But to get them to listen, we need more than a video. We need the paper trail."

"The ledgers!" Connor said suddenly, leaning forward. "Grandmother keeps a red leather book in the safe behind the painting in her study. I saw her put the bank transfer papers inside it after the video ended."

Sarah looked at the boy, realizing the incredible danger he had put himself in to help them. "Connor, you are very brave. But I can't take you back there."

Suddenly, Sarah’s cell phone rang, shattering the quiet of the car. The caller ID flashed brightly on the screen: Detective Miller.

Sarah’s stomach dropped. Detective Miller was a known associate of Sabrina’s husband, a man deeply entrenched in the local corruption.

She answered the call, pressing the phone to her ear. "Hello?"

"Sarah," Miller's voice was rough and demanding. "I'm standing at your mother-in-law's estate. Sabrina is pressing charges for aggravated assault. Furthermore, they are claiming you forcibly abducted Connor from the property."

"He came with me willingly! They were abusing my daughter!" Sarah fired back, her voice shaking with rage.

"That's not how it looks on paper," Miller replied coldly. "You have one hour to return the boy to the estate and turn yourself in at the precinct. If you don't, I'm issuing an Amber Alert and a warrant for your arrest for kidnapping."

The line went dead.
