Chapter 13

The household changes exposed other problems.

Not conspiracies.

Ordinary rot hidden by hierarchy.

A cook underpaid relative to senior staff.

Two night guards working impossible schedules.

One butler giving preferable shifts to cousins.

A housemaid afraid to report inappropriate comments from a guest.

Nothing dramatic enough for family lore.

Important enough for real life.

I started realizing Mother’s old system had protected some people exceptionally well.

Others depended on whether she noticed.

Personal benevolence is not structure.

Estelle’s proposed system would have been worse.

Pierce loyalty over Blackwood loyalty.

Still personal.

We built something duller.

Rules.

Rotation.

Multiple supervisors.

Anonymous reporting.

Mother mocked my “corporate mansion.”

I told her:

“Enjoy your pension.”

She threw a napkin at me.

Hazel became assistant household coordinator after a year.

Not because she exposed Estelle.

Because she was good.

I made sure someone else assessed her work.

Power again.

She accepted the role only after asking:

“Do I still serve dinner?”

“If you want.”

She smiled.

“I like desserts.”

Fine.

Some habits survive promotion.

Marcus Pierce faded from influence.

Estelle built a life outside Blackwood.

Event design, ironically.

She was good at rooms.

Always had been.

She stopped trying to own the people inside them.

At least according to Mother.

I did not keep track closely.

That mattered too.

Letting people leave the center of your story is a form of discipline.

Not every betrayal needs lifelong surveillance.

Sometimes distance is enough.
