Chapter 15

Estelle returned to Blackwood for the first time eighteen months later.

Not as fiancée.

Not as guest of honor.

Mother invited her to a charity dinner.

I approved.

Hazel knew in advance.

Important.

No surprises.

Estelle entered the ballroom and stopped when she saw Mother’s chair.

Occupied.

Mother alive.

Laughing.

No empty symbol.

Hazel approached with dessert.

Estelle’s face tightened.

Then she said:

“Hazel.”

Hazel stopped.

“Yes?”

“I owe you something.”

Not money.

An apology.

Hazel looked at me.

I deliberately looked away.

Her choice.

Estelle said:

“I treated your job like it made your judgment smaller.”

Hazel remained still.

“I hurt you because you tried to stop something I wanted.”

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

Hazel nodded.

“Thank you.”

That was it.

No forgiveness declaration.

No hug.

Estelle accepted it.

Progress.

Later she sat three places from me.

We spoke politely.

No romantic tension.

That surprised me.

Good.

Sometimes endings stay ended.

She had changed.

So had I.

That did not mean we belonged together again.

Mother noticed my calm.

Whispered:

“Disappointed?”

“No.”

“Liar?”

“No.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

Hazel returned with coffee.

Mother immediately asked her to sit.

Hazel said:

“I’m working.”

Mother said:

“You’re always working.”

Hazel replied:

“That is usually how jobs work.”

May you like

I nearly choked.

The house had definitely changed.
