Chapter 2

South Lodge was lit when we arrived.

One car outside.

Collins’s.

No guards.

That irritated me more than an armed perimeter would have.

People who expect no resistance rarely bother hiding.

I entered with Rafe.

My mother sat at the long table.

Eleanor Blackwood.

Seventy-one.

Silver hair.

Straight back.

Furious.

Marcus Pierce stood by the fireplace.

Edmund Calder near the window.

Collins remained by the door.

Mother saw me.

“Finally.”

Relief came first.

Anger immediately after.

Good.

She was herself.

I crossed to her.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Did they stop you leaving?”

Her eyes moved toward Collins.

“He did.”

The driver looked down.

I turned.

“Why?”

Collins swallowed.

“Mr. Pierce said you requested privacy.”

“I was at dinner.”

“I know that now.”

Now.

Convenient.

My mother stood.

Marcus finally spoke.

“This has become unnecessarily dramatic.”

I laughed once.

“You removed my mother from my engagement dinner using my name.”

“She came voluntarily.”

Mother looked at him.

“To meet my son.”

Exactly.

Consent built on a lie is not consent.

“What did you want?”

Marcus adjusted his cuff.

“An understanding.”

Edmund Calder answered more honestly.

“A transition.”

There was that word.

I looked around.

“To what?”

Mother picked up a folded napkin from the table and dropped it.

“To Estelle taking control of your house.”

Silence.

Not organization.

House.

At first that sounded smaller.

Then I understood.

Who controls appointments.

Who enters private rooms.

Which relatives reach me without formal meetings.

Which staff carry messages.

Who sits near me during dinners.

Who hears conversations before captains do.

The mansion was not simply home.

It was the nervous system around the boss.

Mother had managed that informal system since my father died.

Estelle apparently wanted it.

“Why tonight?”

Mother smiled without humor.

“Because an empty chair can be explained however they like.”

Marcus said nothing.

I looked at him.

He wanted the ballroom to see Eleanor Blackwood absent from my engagement.

Then Estelle beside me.

No confrontation.

No refusal.

No awkward blessing.

Just visual succession.

Mother continued.

“They wanted me to stay away until the dinner ended.”

“And in return?”

She stared at Marcus.

“They wanted my word that after the wedding, I would stop interfering with household appointments.”

Marcus corrected:

“Modernizing them.”

May you like

I smiled.

There is always a clean verb waiting for a dirty intention.
