Chapter 14

The girls knew her.

Not perfectly.

Not like memory works for adults.

But bodies remember things minds cannot name.

Claire sat in the hay.

Emma placed Sophie in her arms first.

Sophie went still.

Then Lily.

Then Grace.

Three babies.

One mother.

The barn changed.

Claire began humming.

Three notes.

Pause.

Three more.

All three settled.

Emma looked at me.

Now she understood why my sentence in the barn had sounded less like an observation and more like a verdict.

My children only slept like that with Claire.

Until Emma.

Because Claire had taught her.

Claire touched Grace’s pendant chain.

“It broke.”

“Victor tried to take it.”

Her expression hardened.

“I knew he would.”

I sat across from her.

“Why put the note there instead of sending it directly?”

“Because Victor intercepted everything.”

“Why Grace?”

Claire smiled faintly.

“She grabs jewelry.”

Of course.

Something so ordinary had carried the whole warning.

Then she told me the rest.

She returned to the ranch three nights earlier through an old feed entrance.

She found the pendant where Victor had stored it after her disappearance.

She slipped it into Grace’s blanket and left before dawn.

She expected Victor to search the nursery eventually.

She did not expect him to move the girls so quickly.

“Why did he?”

Claire looked at me.

“Tomorrow’s council.”

I nodded.

She already knew.

That did not surprise me anymore.

Then she said:

“Victor never wanted your chair.”

I frowned.

“What did he want?”

“Your dependence.”

Silence.

That was worse.
