Chapter 15

Victor admitted it after Claire returned.

Not proudly.

But not apologetically either.

He had spent years becoming indispensable.

Ranch.

Security.

Capo communication.

My father trusted him before me.

Then I inherited him like property.

Victor mistook continuity for ownership.

“I kept Whitmore functioning,” he said.

“You kept Whitmore dependent on you.”

“Same thing.”

“No.”

Claire sat beside me.

Not behind.

Not hidden.

Victor hated that.

“You don’t understand what happens when a family like this relies on emotion.”

Claire looked at him.

“You mean love.”

Victor rolled his eyes.

“There. Exactly.”

He could not even hear the difference.

Marco lowered his head.

Victor looked at his brother with disgust.

“Pathetic.”

Marco finally answered.

“No.”

Victor frowned.

“I’m tired.”

That sentence ended more than shouting could.

Marco had spent years obeying his older brother because Victor convinced him obedience was loyalty.

Now he looked exhausted.

I removed both men from Whitmore command.

Marco lost security completely.

Victor lost the ranch, the crews, the private channels, every person who once answered to him before they answered to me.

No execution.

No spectacle.

Victor laughed.

“You think taking my title matters?”

“No.”

I leaned forward.

“Taking your access does.”

That frightened him.

Because access had always been his real power.

Not the chair.

Not the ring.

Doors.

Information.

People reaching me through him.

Claire had seen it first.

May you like

Emma had broken it by existing outside his map.

And my daughters had carried the one message he failed to control.
