Chapter 9

Claire chose Emma for the same reason.

That answer came slowly.

Not because Emma was special to Whitmore.

Because she wasn’t.

Claire had learned that every person close to me could be mapped.

Victor knew the capos.

Marco knew security.

Ranch staff reported upward.

Drivers were predictable.

A diner waitress living paycheck to paycheck sat outside the structure.

Invisible.

Until she mattered.

“What did Claire ask you to do?” I said.

Emma looked at the babies.

“Mostly nothing.”

That surprised me.

“She talked. I listened.”

“Nothing else?”

“Once she left money.”

Emma almost smiled.

“I gave it back.”

That sounded like Claire’s kind of frustration.

“Why?”

“I didn’t want to owe someone who wouldn’t tell me her real name.”

I almost laughed.

Good.

Claire had finally met someone as stubborn as she was.

Emma continued.

“The last week changed.”

Claire started asking about the ranch.

Not secrets.

Weather.

Roads.

Which diner customers wore Whitmore pins.

Whether black SUVs came through late.

Then she asked Emma to remember one sentence.

“If the pendant returns to my daughters, keep them away from the main house.”

That meant Claire expected a move soon.

I looked at Victor.

“What was happening this week?”

His expression told me.

I did not need to guess long.

There was a full Whitmore council scheduled tomorrow.

All major capos.

One table.

One decision.

Victor had been pushing for control of northern security since Claire disappeared.

I kept delaying it because her absence made me suspicious of changing structures.

Now the girls vanish.

I unravel.

Victor restores order.

Then asks for emergency authority.

Everything aligned.

I looked at Marco.

“Was tomorrow the point?”

He nodded.

Victor closed his eyes.

Not because the truth hurt.

Because the timing had finally become visible.

May you like

Claire had not sent me a warning from the past.

She had interrupted a plan already moving toward tomorrow.
