Chapter 10

Mireya asked for Tove after four days.
“Where is she?”
I answered simply.
“She lives somewhere else now.”
“Why?”
Hard.
“Because she made a bad choice when you needed help.”
Mireya frowned.
“She took my inhaler.”
“Yes.”
“Is she bad?”
I thought.
“No.”
She waited.
“She did something very bad.”
That distinction mattered.
I did not want my daughter learning people were either monsters or safe.
Reality is harder.
People can love you and still fail you.
People can seem kind and still make dangerous choices.
We teach children boundaries, not paranoia.
Mireya looked at me.
“She can’t take it again.”
“No.”
“Okay.”
