Chapter 6

I canceled the engagement that night.
No debate.
No pause.
No “time apart.”
Marriage requires trust before forgiveness becomes relevant.
Tove removed the ring herself.
Her hand shook.
“I love you.”
“I know.”
That hurt.
Love does not prevent people from doing terrible things.
Sometimes it makes them more frightened of losing position.
She placed the ring on my desk.
“What happens to Chase?”
“Not your concern.”
Her face tightened.
“And me?”
“You leave.”
“Forever?”
“I don’t know.”
Honest.
But the engagement was over.
That was certain.
She asked about Mireya.
“Can I say goodbye?”
“No.”
Not now.
My daughter did not owe an adult emotional closure after being denied her inhaler.
Tove nodded.
Good.
May you like
One respectful choice.
She left before dawn.
