Chapter 5

Tove finally spoke.
Not immediately.
She cried first.
I waited.
Then she said:
“I wanted proof your mother was manipulating you.”
“By causing Mireya to struggle to breathe?”
“No.”
Her voice broke.
“I thought Mireya would get upset, Margaret would panic, and then everything would become dramatic like always.”
I stared.
“Like always.”
“Yes.”
She hated the emergencies.
Not because she feared for Mireya.
Because they displaced her.
Engagement dinner postponed.
Weekend canceled.
Trip shortened.
Every time Mireya needed me, Tove became secondary.
She had turned normal parental priority into rivalry.
“How did Edwin convince you?”
“He said some children learn patterns.”
Dangerous framing.
“If they know distress brings attention, they repeat it.”
I looked at her.
“Did Dr. Ward say that?”
“No.”
“Any pediatric specialist?”
“No.”
“Anyone who treats Mireya?”
“No.”
Only Edwin.
A man with old family credibility and no active role in her care.
Tove wanted his explanation because it solved an emotional problem.
Mireya wasn’t vulnerable.
She was performing.
Margaret wasn’t caring.
She was manipulating.
I wasn’t a father responding appropriately.
I was a man being controlled.
Convenient.
Then I held up the photograph.
“Why was this in my mother’s bag?”
Tove’s face changed.
“I put it there.”
Good.
“Why?”
She started crying harder.
Because Edwin told her the photo should be discovered only if tonight worked.
If Mireya recovered quickly without needing much intervention, they would later show me evidence that Margaret carried “prepared material” documenting the child’s episodes.
The photograph in her handbag would make it look like Margaret was collecting proof.
Building a case.
For what?
To convince me Tove was unsafe around Mireya.
I stared.
“You planted evidence on my mother.”
“Yes.”
“And then when Mireya genuinely couldn’t breathe, you stole the inhaler.”
Tove covered her face.
“I panicked.”
I leaned closer.
“No.”
She looked at me.
“You committed to the story.”
May you like
That was worse.
For several seconds, Tove chose protecting a lie over helping a child breathe.
