Chapter 10

Preston had not gone into the bridal suite simply because he lost his temper.
Warren had sent him there to create pressure.
That was the major twist.
The plan was not written in one perfect document.
It emerged from multiple pieces that finally matched.
Warren knew Giulietta had refused the revised guarantee.
He also knew canceling the wedding hours before the ceremony would create chaos for both families, damage the riverfront project, and humiliate Preston publicly.
He believed Giulietta cared enough about reputation and the marriage to compromise if frightened at the right moment.
So he told Preston to get her alone.
Make her understand what marriage to a Hale would require.
Make her stop challenging the business arrangement.
Preston admitted Warren used the phrase:
“She needs to know this is the last day she gets to behave like she’s negotiating from outside the family.”
Warren did not tell Preston to strike Giulietta with the golf club.
That part belonged to Preston.
He took the intimidation lesson further than Warren claimed to expect.
But Warren had given him the club earlier that afternoon.
Not as a wedding gift.
As a prop.
It came from a decorative set in Warren’s hotel suite.
Preston was supposed to frighten Giulietta.
Warren believed one of two things would happen.
If Giulietta submitted, the ceremony would proceed.
Afterward, while she was emotionally shaken and surrounded by pressure to preserve the wedding, Warren would present the revised guarantee again.
If she reacted violently, Warren had prepared for that too.
He would enter using the override key.
The wedding would be postponed.
Statement B would frame the crisis around Giulietta’s behavior.
Then the Hales would use the scandal, the canceled ceremony, and the threatened collapse of the joint venture to pressure Marconi Capital into a confidential settlement favorable to them.
It was a two-outcome trap.
Submission or scandal.
Either gave Warren leverage.
The clues had been there before anyone understood them.
Warren requested private access to the bridal suite.
He created the ten-minute window with no staff.
He prepared a behavioral-crisis statement before any confrontation occurred.
He had the revised business documents waiting.
And when he entered the suite, he never asked what happened.
He told Giulietta to put the club down and reminded her that she was marrying into his family.
Because he believed he was entering the version where Giulietta had fought back.
What Warren had not planned for was Preston’s first sentence.
This is how my father taught my mother to obey.
Preston had connected Warren’s old pattern to the new one before Warren could control the story.
That was why Warren froze when Giulietta revealed her own power.
Not simply because Marconi bodyguards filled the hallway.
Because Preston had said the one thing that transformed a private confrontation into a pattern.
Giulietta listened to Naomi summarize the proffer.
Then she asked:
“Did Preston blame his father for the swing?”
“No.”
That mattered.
Preston admitted Warren created the situation.
He also admitted he chose to raise the club.
Giulietta leaned back.
“Good.”
Naomi looked at her strangely.
May you like
“Good?”
“For once, nobody gets to disappear inside somebody else’s guilt.”
