Chapter 11

Preston accepted a plea agreement months later.

The exact charges reflected what prosecutors could prove.

The locked room.

The threat.

The golf club.

The swing.

His cooperation against Warren reduced his exposure.

It did not erase it.

Before entering the plea, Preston asked through counsel whether Giulietta wanted an apology.

She declined.

Naomi asked why.

“Because he can apologize without using me as the audience.”

Preston’s cooperation also led investigators deeper into the Hale business records.

Warren’s financial problems were real.

The riverfront project had not been invented as part of the scheme.

That almost made his behavior worse.

He had allowed ordinary business pressure to become justification for coercion.

Hale Hospitality began selling assets to satisfy lenders.

Warren’s board removed him from day-to-day management pending litigation and criminal proceedings.

For the first time in decades, he could not solve a problem by ordering someone else into a room.

Elaine contacted Giulietta after Preston entered his plea.

“I heard he admitted it.”

“Yes.”

“Did he mention me?”

“Only when prosecutors asked about what he said in the suite.”

Elaine was quiet.

Then:

“I spent twenty years wondering whether leaving him with Warren was the reason he became like this.”

Giulietta answered carefully.

“He was eighteen.”

“I know.”

“He had twenty-one years after that.”

“I know.”

Neither woman tried to make the answer kinder.

Elaine had escaped.

Preston had stayed.

Then Preston had become an adult who repeated what he saw.

Those facts could hurt without becoming destiny.

That distinction mattered to Giulietta.

She had seen too many Mafia families describe cruelty as inheritance.

My father did it.

My uncle taught me.

This is how our family survives.

Every generation treated the last one like permission.

Giulietta had no interest in continuing that tradition.
