Chapter 12

Warren refused the first plea offer.
He called the case a conspiracy created by Giulietta to seize business advantage after abandoning his son.
His attorneys attacked Preston’s credibility.
They described him as a desperate defendant blaming his father to reduce his own sentence.
That argument was not absurd.
Which was why prosecutors did not rely on Preston alone.
They had the access logs.
The schedule changes.
The PR drafts.
The assistant’s testimony.
The financial documents delivered to the hotel.
The calls connecting Warren, Preston, and the PR team in the hours before the confrontation.
They also had Elaine.
Not as proof Warren committed the new charged conduct.
Her marriage was too old and legally separate to become a shortcut.
But certain evidence about Warren’s history became relevant during pretrial litigation because Preston had explicitly invoked what Warren taught him.
The judge limited what could be used.
Giulietta respected that.
A courtroom was not supposed to become a place where every bad thing a person had ever done proved every new allegation automatically.
The Marconi family found this restraint maddening.
One capo asked Giulietta why she did not simply destroy Hale Hospitality through suppliers, lenders, and political relationships.
“Because Warren tried to use power instead of truth.”
The capo waited.
Giulietta stared at him.
“I’m not copying his strategy just because I have more power.”
The man nodded slowly.
It was becoming clear that the failed wedding had changed more than Giulietta’s relationship.
She began separating her legitimate companies from arrangements that depended on family intimidation.
Some older Marconi figures hated it.
Others quietly admitted they were relieved.
Giulietta had always believed control made her safe.
Preston proved that control could put armed men in a hallway and still leave her alone behind a locked door.
What saved her had not been her name.

It had been recognizing danger quickly and refusing to freeze.
That was a different kind of strength.
