Chapter 11

Sofia did not return to Raffaele’s mansion immediately.
She took Ava to a private apartment she had owned before the engagement.
Raffaele wanted guards on every floor.
Sofia refused.
“Two outside.”
He accepted it.
That surprised both of them.
For years Raffaele solved fear by adding control.
Sofia had just learned what control disguised as love could become.
He did not want to repeat the lesson.
Ava asked where Preston was.
Sofia answered simply:
“He did something very wrong.”
“Is he coming home?”
“No.”
“Did he hurt you?”
Sofia paused.
“Yes.”
Ava climbed into her lap.
No further questions.
Children often stopped before adults expected them to.
Raffaele dealt with the external consequences.
The wedding was formally canceled.
Guests were notified.
Gifts returned.
Business ties with Preston and Grace were suspended.
Several Hale associates complained.
Raffaele ignored them.
Then his attorney reminded him:
“You also struck Preston and Grace.”
“I know.”
“You have footage.”
“I know.”
“You could argue defense as to parts of it.”
“Then argue what is true.”
Raffaele would not use Beatrice’s death to erase his own actions.
Meanwhile, investigators received Sofia’s new statement, the recovered intercom audio, Beatrice’s journals, the access records, and the old medical documents.
The missing audio card remained missing.
Preston’s admission filled some gaps.
Not all.
Grace still denied removing evidence.

The truth was much clearer.
Legal responsibility remained slower.
