Chapter 12

Grace broke first.

Not under threat.

Under abandonment.

Preston stopped taking her calls.

His attorneys advised him to distance himself from anything concerning the missing recording.

Grace suddenly understood what she had spent decades doing.

Protecting a son who now needed her to carry the worst part alone.

She requested another interview.

This time she admitted taking the audio card.

“Where is it?”

Sofia asked.

Grace looked down.

“I destroyed it.”

“How?”

“I snapped it.”

“And then?”

“Burned the pieces.”

Sofia closed her eyes.

Beatrice had died protecting evidence that no longer existed.

Grace continued.

“I thought Preston would change.”

Raffaele looked at her.

“When?”

Grace frowned.

“What?”

“After Beatrice died? After Sofia was drugged? After he married another woman to monitor her memory?”

Grace started crying.

Raffaele did not raise his voice.

“When exactly did you expect him to become the man you were protecting?”

Grace had no answer.

She admitted something else.

Beatrice had threatened to expose Grace too.

Not for murder.

For years of helping Preston control the marriage.

Calling employers.

Interfering with bank access.

Explaining bruises.

Pressuring Beatrice’s family to stop asking questions.

Grace had believed preserving Preston meant preserving the Hale family.

Instead she helped make him worse.

Sofia listened.

Then said:

“You didn't lose control of him.”

Grace looked up.

May you like

“You taught him somebody would always clean up after him.”

That was the first sentence Grace did not try to argue with.
