Chapter 15

A year later, the sculpture foundry reopened its main gallery after a long renovation.
The wedding decorations were gone.
The private mezzanine had been rebuilt with permanent railings.
The gallery where Beatrice died now held a small rotating exhibition supporting artists escaping abusive relationships.
Sofia funded it anonymously at first.
Then she changed her mind.
The plaque used Beatrice’s name.
Not the Hales’.
Not the Santoros’.
Just:
BEATRICE.
Ava attended the opening.
She was five now.
She stood in front of one bronze sculpture holding Sofia’s hand.
“Was Beatrice your friend?”
Sofia looked at the plaque.
“Yes.”
“Did she die here?”
Sofia had thought carefully about how much to tell her.
“Yes.”
Ava squeezed her hand.
“Was she nice?”
Sofia smiled sadly.
“She was very brave.”
That was enough for five.
Preston’s legal case continued through the courts, involving the assault, concealment surrounding Beatrice’s death, and related conduct.
Grace cooperated and faced consequences for her own role.
Neither outcome restored Beatrice.
Neither repaired Sofia’s lost years.
Raffaele also resolved the consequences of the wedding-gallery violence separately.
He accepted responsibility for striking Preston and Grace rather than demanding that the family make the matter disappear.
He hated the required counseling.
Then, to his surprise, he kept going after the requirement ended.
Sofia noticed.
She never teased him about it.
Their relationship changed in smaller ways too.
Raffaele asked before sending security.
Asked before making calls on Sofia’s behalf.
Asked before solving problems she had not given him.
He discovered that protecting an adult daughter required more restraint than protecting a child.
One evening after the exhibition closed, Sofia remained alone in the gallery.
Raffaele found her standing near the mezzanine.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
He waited.
Sofia looked toward the railing.
“I remembered something else.”
Raffaele’s expression changed.
“What?”
She closed her eyes.
Beatrice’s voice.
Not screaming.
Not begging.
Calm.
Right before everything broke apart.
Run, Sofia.
Sofia opened her eyes.
“For five years I thought the last thing she felt was fear.”
Raffaele waited.
“She was trying to save me.”
He put one hand in his pocket rather than reaching for her.
Sofia noticed.
Then she took his arm herself.
They walked toward the exit.
At the door Sofia looked back once.
May you like
There were still pieces of that night she might never recover.
For the first time, she no longer believed remembering all of them was the same thing as surviving them.
