Chapter 5

Sabrina’s reason was uglier.

She did not care about ritual.

She cared about inheritance of relevance.

Not money.

Position.

She had spent thirty-five years as Thomas Cole’s daughter.

Then Gavin married a Ferrante.

Suddenly every Cole gathering revolved around Sienna.

Every conversation became:

What does Nico think?

What does Ferrante want?

Will the children grow up around us or them?

Sabrina felt her family disappearing into mine.

So she became Marjorie’s most enthusiastic helper.

“When Mila saw Gavin push Sienna, why cut her hair?”

Sabrina looked ashamed now.

Good.

“At first I only wanted to scare her.”

“With scissors.”

Silence.

“She loves that braid.”

Exactly.

Sienna braided it every morning.

Mila called it her princess hair.

Sabrina chose something emotionally valuable.

Not random.

“Why that?”

She whispered:

“Because she wouldn’t stop saying she’d tell you.”

There.

A child knew where safety lived.

They punished the route.

I placed the severed braid on the table between us.

Sabrina looked away.

“Look at it.”

She did.

“You wanted a three-year-old to associate telling me the truth with losing something she loved.”

Tears.

“Yes.”

That was enough.

No need for theatrical cruelty back.

She had already defined herself.
