Chapter 12

My father’s old wagers ended.

All of them.

I reviewed every unresolved symbolic bet in the yacht club archives.

Nine still had people arguing about meaning.

I invited the families.

One at a time.

No children.

“What did both sides actually agree?”

Usually nobody knew.

Excellent.

Then no claim.

If evidence existed, we honored the narrow terms.

If not, history remained history.

One elderly man accused me of destroying club tradition.

I asked:

“Did tradition require twelve-year-olds to unknowingly decide docking rights?”

He said:

“You make it sound ridiculous.”

“It is ridiculous.”

He left angry.

The club survived.

Another miracle.

We replaced the Founder’s Junior Cup rules.

No hidden stakes.

No adult wagers tied to results.

No family property associated with youth events.

Warren helped write them.

That mattered.

Not redemption.

Responsibility.

Patrick entered the next season.

Simon did too.

Separate age categories.

Thank God.

Patrick won one race.

Fairly.

He looked at Warren before celebrating.

His uncle raised both hands.

“Nothing attached.”

Patrick laughed.

Simon finished third in his group.

He was furious for seven minutes.

Then discovered third place came with ice cream.

Recovery.

I watched from the terrace.

No deals.

No adults reading political meaning into toy boats.

May you like

Just children learning that losing can hurt without becoming humiliation.

That was new in our world.
