Chapter 9

Simon decided after two weeks.

“Patrick can come.”

Then:

“No trophy.”

Fair.

Patrick arrived holding nothing.

He stood on the terrace where the race happened.

Simon had repaired the sailboat with me.

The mast was slightly crooked.

We could have replaced it completely.

Simon wanted the cracked one.

“Because I know it.”

Good enough.

Patrick stared at the boat.

“I’m sorry.”

Simon looked at him.

“For what?”

Patrick swallowed.

“I knew she broke it.”

Simon waited.

“I didn’t tell.”

More.

“I wanted trophy.”

Simon touched the mast.

“You kicked it?”

“No.”

“Did you tell her?”

“No.”

Simon considered.

Then:

“Okay.”

Not forgiveness necessarily.

Just receipt.

Patrick looked confused.

“Are you mad?”

“Yes.”

Good.

Children are excellent when adults stop coaching them toward politeness.

Patrick nodded.

Then Simon asked:

“Want help sail?”

I almost interfered.

Didn’t.

They placed the repaired boat in the shallow pool.

No race.

Just sail.

It leaned left because the mast was crooked.

Patrick laughed.

Simon glared.

Then laughed too.

For ten minutes, adults meant nothing.

That was the point.

Warren watched from inside the clubhouse.

He approached once.

Simon immediately took the boat out of the water.

No.

Warren saw it.

May you like

Stopped.

Progress sometimes looks like an adult accepting a five-year-old’s body language without complaint.
