Chapter 7

The yacht club board expected me to fire Warren immediately.

I didn’t.

Not yet.

I wanted the full pattern.

Seventeen marked wins.

How many sabotaged?

Nine confirmed.

Four suspicious.

Four probably legitimate.

Again.

Not every victory was fake.

That mattered.

If I declared all Hayes wins fraudulent, I would create the next generation’s grievance.

Truth needed precision.

One legitimate winner was Patrick.

Two years earlier.

He had won a race fairly.

Warren marked it E afterward and used the result to pressure another family over East Dock storage.

Patrick had no idea.

A child’s genuine achievement hijacked after the fact.

That angered me differently.

I showed Patrick the record.

“You won this one.”

He looked surprised.

“For real?”

“Yes.”

“No broken boats?”

“None we found.”

He smiled.

Then looked sad.

“My trophy?”

“Yours.”

Children need their honest victories rescued from adult corruption too.

The current trophy was different.

Simon had been sabotaged.

Patrick knew.

I asked him what he wanted done with it.

He thought.

“Give back.”

“To whom?”

He pointed at the yacht club office.

Good.

No dramatic destruction.

The club could keep the object.

The result would be listed as void.

Warren hated that.

“He crossed first.”

“After Simon’s boat was destroyed before launch.”

“That’s not Patrick’s fault.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“That’s yours.”

Silence.

The distinction protected Patrick without preserving the lie.

Then I removed Warren as race director.

Not yacht-club manager yet.

He could run food, maintenance, schedules.

He would not touch youth competitions.

He called it humiliation.

I called it a boundary proportionate to what he manipulated.

Lenore asked whether I intended to destroy her brother’s life.

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“I intend to stop confusing consequence with destruction.”

That sentence was partly for myself.

Mafia families often know only two settings.

Untouched.

May you like

Ruined.

There are more.
