Chapter 1

My daughter was chained to a porch post at a family birthday party.
That was the first thing I saw when I turned the corner of the house.
Lily stood beside a white wooden column while children ran across the lawn behind her.
A loose metal chain circled her waist.
Another loop held one wrist.
Her skin beneath it was red from struggling.
She was three.
I crossed the lawn before anyone noticed me.
“Mommy.”
Her voice broke.
I tore the chain loose.
The clasp hit the deck.
Lily threw herself against me.
Then Margaret arrived.
My mother-in-law walked across the grass holding a glass of red punch.
She didn't ask whether Lily was hurt.
She threw the entire drink into my face.
Cold liquid ran down my blouse.
Then she slapped me.
“Take your bastard and get out of my family’s party.”
I wiped the punch from my eyes.
Daniel appeared behind her.
My husband.
Lily’s father.
For half a second, I expected him to ask what happened.
Instead, he grabbed my arm.
“Enough.”
He shoved me backward.
Lily hid behind my legs.
Then she whispered:
“Dad said I have to stay out here until the party is over.”
I stopped breathing.
Daniel looked at her.
Not ashamed.
Annoyed.
“She wouldn’t behave.”
“She was chained.”
“It was loose.”
Margaret laughed.
“She could breathe.”
I looked at both of them.
Then opened my handbag.
The sealed DNA report landed on the grass.
Mark picked it up.
His expression changed when he read the result.
99.99%.
Daniel Whitmore was Lily’s biological father.
Mark looked at Margaret.
“Mom… did you already know?”
Fear flashed across her face.
Daniel lunged for the paper.
I intercepted him.
He swung first.
I hit him once.
He crashed backward through the birthday buffet.
Margaret grabbed Lily’s cardigan.
I tore her hand away and slapped her hard enough to send her into the balloon display.
Then I picked up the report.
“If you abandoned my daughter, I’m abandoning this family.”
Daniel instinctively looked at his mother.
That was when I knew.

He wasn’t shocked by the DNA result.
He was shocked that I had brought proof.
