Chapter 14

Victor cracked first.

Not from fear.

From anger.

“This was Margaret’s plan.”

She turned.

“You coward.”

He ignored her.

“She contacted me six months ago.”

“Why?”

“Daniel was unhappy.”

I looked at my husband.

Victor continued.

“Margaret wanted a stronger alliance.”

“Savannah.”

“Yes.”

“And my removal?”

“Later.”

Margaret snapped:

“He’s lying.”

Victor laughed.

“You promised me west shipping access.”

Mark stared.

“You sold Whitmore access?”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“I negotiated cooperation.”

I almost smiled.

Every betrayal still needed a polite name.

Victor continued.

“Claire leaves. Daniel takes visible control. Savannah joins him. Price men support the transition.”

“And Lily?”

He hesitated.

Margaret answered.

“Sent away.”

I looked at Victor.

“To where?”

“Lake house first.”

“Then?”

Silence.

“Then?”

He looked at Margaret.

She closed her eyes.

Victor swallowed.

“Boarding arrangement.”

My blood went cold.

Not documents.

Not legal guardianship.

Just distance.

A private property.

Paid caregivers.

A three-year-old removed from everyone she knew.

Margaret said:

“She would adjust.”

Mark looked sick.

“She sleeps with Claire’s scarf when Claire travels overnight.”

Margaret shrugged.

“She’d stop.”

There it was.

Cruelty as confidence.

I turned to Daniel.

“You agreed?”

He looked at the floor.

“Mother said it was temporary.”

Victor laughed.

Margaret glared.

He continued.

“She told me permanent.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Another lie.

He stared at his mother.

“You said Lily could come back.”

Margaret looked almost bored.

“She would have complicated everything.”

Daniel stood.

“She’s my daughter.”

Margaret smiled cruelly.

“Interesting time to remember.”

That landed.

He stepped back.

No defense.

None deserved.

Then Mark asked:

“What about Claire?”

Victor answered.

“She was never supposed to return to Long Island.”

Daniel went still.

He hadn’t known that either.

Margaret had promised him wife gone.

Daughter later.

New family.

Control.

But the full plan erased Claire permanently.

I looked at Daniel.

He stared at his mother.

May you like

For the first time, he looked at her the way Lily had.

Like someone realizing the person who claimed to protect him had never loved him without conditions.
