Chapter 11

The messages were simple.

Daniel to Margaret.

Once Claire reaches the dock, Price handles the rest.

Margaret:

No visible marks.

Daniel:

And Lily?

Margaret:

Separate vehicle.

My hands went cold.

Another message.

Daniel:

What if Claire fights?

Margaret:

She will.

Daniel:

Then?

Margaret:

That’s why Victor is sending six men.

I looked at Daniel.

He said nothing.

I kept reading.

Daniel:

How long until she can return?

Margaret:

She doesn’t.

Silence.

The room disappeared around me.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

I had spent years managing men who lied to survive.

Daniel had lied while sleeping beside me.

“What was the plan?”

He whispered:

“To keep you away.”

“Where?”

“No fixed place.”

“For how long?”

Silence.

“Say it.”

“Until you stopped controlling Whitmore operations.”

There.

Not marriage.

Power.

“You wanted my organization.”

“It was my family first.”

I almost smiled.

“No.”

Daniel stared.

“What?”

“You still don’t know.”

Margaret’s expression changed.

She did.

Interesting.

I looked at her.

“When did you find out?”

No answer.

Mark frowned.

“Find out what?”

I removed my signet ring.

Placed it on the table.

Then looked at the Whitmore guards.

“My men.”

Every guard straightened.

Not for Daniel.

Not Margaret.

Me.

Mark stared.

Victor looked confused.

Daniel whispered:

“What are you doing?”

I smiled.

“Telling you why your plan was always dead.”

For five years, I had quietly controlled the Whitmore organization.

Daniel was underboss.

Public face when needed.

Useful.

Trusted.

But not head.

Margaret knew only recently.

That explained the urgency.

“You discovered the truth.”

Her jaw tightened.

“You stole my family.”

“No.”

“I built this organization.”

“And nearly destroyed it twice.”

Mark looked at Daniel.

“You knew?”

Daniel shook his head.

He hadn’t.

Margaret had hidden that from him too.

Of course.

She never shared all the information.

Not even with her favorite son.

Daniel stared at me.

“You let me think—”

“That you were more powerful than you were?”

His face twisted.

I stepped closer.

May you like

“Now you know how Lily felt.”

And for the first time, Daniel understood the chain around his daughter had been a perfect symbol for the role his mother had given him too.
