Chapter 11

Bianca’s apology came in writing.
Not to me.
To Emma.
That surprised me.
Emma showed me only because she wanted advice.
The letter said:
I knew you were watching before I knew you were recording.
Interesting.
Bianca had noticed Emma’s discomfort.
Instead of stopping, she became more careful.
Then:
I treated your position as permission to ignore your judgment.
Good.
Specific.
Then Lucy.
No letter.
Bianca wrote:
I will not contact Lucy unless Vittorio and Lucy both want it someday.
Better.
No emotional demand.
No “please tell her.”
No gift.
Emma asked:
“Should I answer?”
“What do you want?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then don’t yet.”
She waited two months.
Eventually sent one sentence:
What you did was not discipline.
That was all.
Bianca replied:
I know.
Done.
I received my own letter six months later.
Longer.
She told me more about Marcus raising her.
Their father once forced Marcus to eat from the floor after spilling soup.
There it was.
The image had history.
Bianca had watched as a child.
Hated her father.
Then decades later repeated the same humiliation on Lucy.
Not because she consciously wanted to become him.
Because under fear, people reach for familiar weapons.
The insight mattered.
It did not excuse her.
She knew that.
She wrote:
The worst part is that I remember promising myself I would never become someone who could do that.
I folded the letter.
No answer for weeks.
Then finally:
Understanding it is not the same as repairing it. Keep going.
That was all.
No romance.
No invitation.
May you like
No absolution.
Her work belonged to her now.
