Chapter 12

Lucy turned five.

She remembered the dog bowl.

Not constantly.

But sometimes strange things brought it back.

A restaurant placed a water dish outside for pets.

She stared.

Then asked:

“People don’t eat there?”

“No.”

“Ever?”

“Not because someone makes them.”

Important.

She nodded.

Then fed a dog one French fry before I stopped her.

Different problem.

Her memory of Marcus was softer.

“Uncle map.”

That was his permanent name for a while.

He had not seen her since the breakfast room.

Eventually she asked:

“Where Uncle Map?”

I laughed despite myself.

“Working.”

“Can he come?”

I paused.

“Do you want him to?”

She shrugged.

“Maybe.”

Children do not grant symbolic forgiveness.

They want information.

Sometimes toys.

Sometimes relatives.

I contacted Marcus.

The meeting happened in the garden.

Open space.

Emma nearby because Lucy asked.

Marcus approached slowly.

No suit.

No capo pin.

Lucy stared.

“You map.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

“You steal.”

“Yes.”

“And laugh dog.”

His face broke.

“Yes.”

Good.

No correction.

No minimizing.

“Why?”

Marcus crouched.

“I was scared people would know I made a big mistake.”

Lucy frowned.

“So you make me dog?”

There it was.

Marcus swallowed.

“I let Bianca do that because I wanted you to stop talking about my mistake.”

Lucy looked disgusted.

“That mean.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Don’t.”

“I won’t.”

She stared for another few seconds.

Then held out a plastic dinosaur.

“Hold.”

Marcus took it.

Apparently meeting concluded.

He later told me that hurt more than any punishment I gave him.

Why?

May you like

Because Lucy trusted him with a toy before he trusted her with truth.

Children are brutal teachers.
