Chapter 15

Emma eventually left household service entirely.

Not because of trauma.

Because she opened a small catering business.

She had always wanted to.

Again.

I learned late.

She asked if Bellafonte would be her first large client.

I said yes.

No favor pricing.

Real contract.

She argued with my steward over every detail.

Excellent.

At the launch dinner, Lucy helped place napkins.

Mostly incorrectly.

Emma fixed them.

Lucy protested.

“I’m boss.”

Emma laughed.

“No.”

I watched.

No adult looked at me for permission to correct my daughter.

Progress.

Lucy frowned.

“Daddy boss.”

Emma said:

“Not of napkins.”

I almost disagreed.

Decided survival mattered.

Later Emma told me:

“Your house is quieter now.”

“Better?”

“Different.”

Fair.

Bianca had created fear quietly.

After she left, everyone overcorrected into vigilance.

Staff reported everything.

Aunt complained about soup.

Report.

Child cried in hallway.

Report.

Marcus visited.

Report.

Eventually balance returned.

Not every discomfort is abuse.

Not every disagreement is conspiracy.

Systems designed after crisis can become their own kind of panic.

We adjusted.

Clear lines.

Basic needs.

Physical safety.

Humiliation.

Secrecy involving children.

Those mattered immediately.

Everything else could use judgment.

Leadership again.

Not rules replacing thought.

Rules making room for it.
