Chapter 2

Sarah’s leg was badly sprained.
No break.
That mattered medically.
It changed nothing else.
We moved her into the sitting room.
Emma refused to leave her side.
David remained under guard in another wing.
Margaret too.
Not prisoners.
Separated.
I wanted every story told without another person’s face in the room directing the answer.
Sarah stared at the fire.
I sat opposite her.
“When did it start?”
“After Emma turned one.”
“David?”
She nodded.
“At first he grabbed.”
Wrists.
Arms.
Shoulders.
Then blocked doors.
Then shoved.
Always followed by apology.
Then explanation.
Work pressure.
Family tension.
My expectations.
Her tone.
Her timing.
Eventually even Emma crying became a reason.
“And Margaret?”
Sarah looked ashamed.
“She told me men like David calm down if nobody makes them feel challenged.”
I closed my eyes.
“What did you say?”
“That he pushed me.”
“And?”
“She said if I repeated that outside the house, I’d destroy Emma’s family.”
There.
Not protection.
Responsibility transferred downward.
David hurt Sarah.
Margaret made Sarah responsible for preventing the consequence.
Classic.
Efficient.
Cruel.
Then I asked:
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Sarah looked directly at me.
“Because David said you’d kill him.”
That hurt.
Not because I planned to.
Because she believed it possible.
My reputation had become part of his cage.
He told her that if I learned the truth, blood would follow.
Then Emma would lose her father.
Then the Mercer alliance would collapse.
Then Sarah would carry the blame.
He turned my danger into his protection.
I had never laid a hand on David before tonight.

Still, he used what people imagined I might do.
Power has consequences even when you do nothing with it.
