Chapter 5

The cinematic, bright lighting of the hall felt surreal against the dark, heavy tension radiating from Vincent as he arrived at the main family table. He stopped just a few feet away, his towering, powerful frame casting a long shadow over the wreckage. The silence in the room was absolute, a heavy vacuum waiting for the explosion.

Laura, holding Emma tightly against her elegant formal dress, looked up as her father approached. She gently wiped the tears from the three-year-old's rosy cheeks and slowly helped Emma stand up on her tiny, pristine flats.

Laura’s face was a mask of unadulterated rage. She did not cower; she possessed the same fierce, unyielding Moretti blood that ran through her father's veins.

"Dad," Laura said, her American accent ringing clearly through the dead silent room. She pointed a shaking, manicured finger directly at the older woman standing a few feet away. "She kicked the chair out from under her."

Vincent’s sharply defined jawline clenched. The muscles twitched visibly beneath his short, neatly trimmed stubble. His cold, intimidating eyes slowly shifted from his daughter and granddaughter, locking entirely onto his sixty-eight-year-old sister.

"Vincent, do not look at me like that," Margaret scoffed, though her fair, powdered face betrayed a flicker of genuine anxiety. She adjusted the heavy pearl necklace at her throat, desperately trying to project her former aristocratic authority. "I am the eldest of this family. I was simply enforcing the standards that our parents set. You have allowed this house to become a sanctuary for outsiders."

"A standard," Vincent repeated, his deep, raspy voice barely a whisper.

The controlled pauses between his words felt like tightening garrote wire. He took one slow, deliberate step closer to his sister. The refined, sharp tattoos on his hands flexed as he kept his arms loosely at his sides.

"You believe," Vincent continued, his volume remaining dangerously low, "that our parents' standards... included assaulting a three-year-old child... in front of two hundred guests."

"She is not a Moretti!" Margaret shrieked, her temper flaring as she realized she was losing the narrative. She gestured wildly toward Emma. "She has no blood right to sit at the head table! She belongs in the kitchen with the hired help! I will not sit here and pretend she is my equal!"

"Aunt Margaret, shut your mouth!" David yelled, stepping forward to defend his sister, his hands balled into tight fists. "If you say one more word about her, I don't care how old you are, I'll—"

"David," Vincent murmured, holding up a single, tattooed finger. The sixteen-year-old boy immediately fell silent, stepping back but keeping his defensive posture.

Vincent slowly lowered his hand. He stared at his sister, his eyes devoid of any human warmth, mercy, or forgiveness. The atmosphere in the room had shifted from a festive banquet to a high-stakes tribunal, and Margaret was profoundly unaware that the verdict had already been decided.
