Chapter 8

The ringing silence in the massive banquet hall was profound, broken only by the soft, residual sniffling of the little girl hiding behind Vincent’s legs. The bright, natural cinematic lighting illuminated the sweat beginning to bead on Margaret’s powdered forehead. Pinned against the heavy wooden kitchen doors and blocked by the towering bodyguards, the reality of her complete powerlessness finally crashed down upon her.

Vincent stood a few feet away, his chest rising and falling with slow, perfectly controlled breaths. He adjusted the unbuttoned collar of his dress shirt, the artistic, elegant tattoos on his neck flexing slightly. The deeply masculine, terrifying aura he projected filled the entire room, suffocating the wealthy guests who remained frozen in place.

He took one slow, deliberate step toward the bodyguards. At his approach, the two massive men silently parted, creating a narrow gap for the Boss to address his prisoner.

Margaret looked up at her younger brother. Her fair, rosy skin had turned a sickly, translucent white. The venomous arrogance that had defined her entire life was entirely gone, replaced by pure, unadulterated terror.

"Vincent," Margaret wheezed, her American accent cracking into a pathetic, high-pitched whimper. She pressed herself harder against the wooden doors. "Vincent, please. I am your sister. We share the same blood. You cannot do this to me in front of the families."

Vincent did not blink. His cold, sharp, intimidating eyes pierced straight through her pathetic excuses. He leaned forward slightly, his angular face and sharply defined jawline bathed in the bright light of the chandelier.

"You want my daughter... in the kitchen," Vincent whispered.

His deep, slightly raspy voice dropped into a register of pure, concentrated ice. He was growling through tightly clenched teeth, the lethal fury in his tone vibrating through the very floorboards of the hall. Every word sounded measured, cold, and dripping with an apocalyptic promise.

"And I want you," Vincent continued, the dark, deadly promise hanging heavily in the air, "in a nursing home."

Margaret’s face became a portrait of absolute, paralyzing fright. Her eyes went wide, and her jaw dropped. The threat was not just a dismissal; in their world, being exiled to a "nursing home" run by the syndicate meant total isolation, stripped of all wealth, communication, and dignity, locked away in a gilded cage until death. It was a fate worse than a bullet for a woman addicted to power.

"No! Please, Vincent, no!" Margaret shrieked, her pearl necklace rattling as she shook her head violently. "I'll leave the state! I'll never come back! You can't lock me away!"

Vincent stared at her for one long, unforgiving second, letting the absolute terror of her new reality sink permanently into her bones. He had made his decision, and the king's word was final law.
