Chapter 13

Brielle saw Micah after eleven months.
Neutral garden café.
No Caleb.
No ring.
No expectations.
Micah sat beside me.
Brielle stayed across the table.
“I’m sorry.”
Micah looked at her.
“For post?”
“Yes.”
“For Caleb?”
“Yes.”
“For tell me don’t move?”
“Yes.”
He thought.
Then:
“Why?”
Hardest question.
Brielle answered better than I expected.
“Because I wanted your family to change so I would feel more important.”
Micah frowned.
“That’s dumb.”
I almost smiled.
Brielle did too.
“Yes.”
He looked at me.
Then her.
“Don’t do again.”
“I won’t.”
Meeting over.
No hug.
No dramatic forgiveness.
Micah wanted ice cream.
Perfect.
When we left, Brielle cried alone at the table.
I did not return.
May you like
Her grief belonged to her.
Not to my son.
