Chapter 15

Martin died three years later.

Natural causes.

No reconciliation.

He never apologized.

He sent Caleb one birthday card every year.

I asked whether Caleb wanted them.

Sometimes yes.

Sometimes no.

Micah rarely did.

When Martin died, Elise invited us to the funeral.

I asked the boys.

Micah wanted to go because “Aunt Elise sad.”

Caleb did not.

Both choices respected.

At the funeral, Elise spoke about her father honestly.

He loved fiercely.

Controlled fiercely.

Mistook separation for strength.

Turned his fears into rules.

No saint.

No monster.

A man whose unresolved history became policy.

Afterward she handed me an old photograph.

Martin, Daniel, Elise as children.

Standing together.

Before their father began separating them.

On the back, Martin’s mother had written:

KEEP THEM CLOSE.

I laughed sadly.

Families repeat warnings they fail to follow.

I gave the photograph to Elise.

Not an heirloom I needed.

May you like

Her history.

Her choice.
