Chapter 16

The Roswell children’s pavilion changed.

We removed the padded support post.

Not because posts are evil.

Because the structure was being renovated anyway.

The new pavilion had open space.

No fixed column near the games.

Micah noticed.

“Post gone.”

“Yes.”

“Because bad?”

“Because old.”

He thought.

“Good.”

Fair.

We still had piñatas.

Still had bats.

No blindfolds unless a child specifically wanted one.

Most didn’t.

The boys eventually turned the old fabric sash into a cape for a stuffed bear.

Another object demoted.

Good.

Brielle never returned to family events.

She built another life.

Occasionally Micah sent her a holiday card.

Caleb never did.

No one forced either.

I heard she eventually married someone outside Roswell.

Good.

No bitterness required.

Consequences do not need lifelong punishment to remain real.
