Chapter 13

Kevin blamed me.
Naturally.
“You've trapped them.”
I stared.
“How?”
“They know you'll cut access.”
“No.”
“You'll close accounts.”
“No.”
“They're afraid.”
Daniel Ross laughed.
Kevin turned.
“What?”
Daniel said:
“We're afraid of you owing us money.”
Silence.
A few men smiled.
Kevin's face hardened.
Daniel continued.
“You promised payments you couldn't authorize.”
Marcus Dean nodded.
“You promised routes you didn't control.”
Thomas added:
“You promised a succession you didn't own.”
One by one.
The lie collapsing from every side.
Kevin looked at Dad.
Richard stood silent.
Interesting.
No rescue now.
Kevin snapped:
“Say something.”
Dad stared.
Kevin stepped closer.
“You built this.”
Richard's face hardened.
“You failed it.”
There.
Cruel.
Clean.
Kevin stopped.
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Dad continued.
“You lost control.”
Kevin laughed bitterly.
“You gave Madison the bucket.”
Richard said nothing.
“You told me to provoke Claire.”
Silence.
“You said she'd slap me and everyone would see.”
Dad looked away.
Kevin stepped closer.
“You planned this.”
Richard whispered:
“I planned discipline.”
There.
Same euphemism.
Kevin laughed.
“You always have another word.”
Good.
He was finally hearing it too.
Dad's face hardened.
“You couldn't even manage one birthday.”
Kevin stared.
“Manage?”
“You let Claire hit you.”
Silence.
I stepped closer.
“Interesting.”
Dad turned.
“You still think the problem is that he lost the fight.”
He looked at me.
“Yes.”
There.
No shame.
Not Noah.
Not theft.
Not assault.
Failure.
Richard only hated cruelty when it failed.
I looked at Thomas.
“How long has he been like this?”
Thomas sighed.
“Always.”
Dad glared.
Thomas continued.
“Your grandfather stopped trusting Richard after Kevin was born.”
Kevin looked up.
“What?”
Dad said:
“Don't.”
Thomas ignored him.
“Richard started talking succession before Kevin could walk.”
Silence.
History repeating.
Now Madison.
Always children.
Always future power.
Thomas looked at Kevin.
“He dressed you for meetings at five.”
Kevin stared.
“That's normal.”
“No.”
Thomas shook his head.
“He taught you people stood when you entered because you were special.”
Kevin's face changed.
Madison listened.
“He told you Claire existed to support you.”
Silence.
I stared at Dad.
So did Kevin.
Dad said:
“You were the son.”
There.
Simple.
The original poison.
Kevin laughed weakly.
“And grandfather still chose Claire.”
Dad's face hardened.
“Yes.”
A wound he never healed.
Not Kevin's wound.
Richard's.
He had spent four years trying to reverse his father's decision.
Using Kevin.
Then Madison.
And degrading Noah because Noah represented a branch of the family he never wanted powerful.
I looked at Dad.
“This was never about Kevin.”
Silence.
“Or Madison.”
Nothing.
“Or me.”
His face tightened.
“It was about grandfather telling you no.”
Richard stared.
I continued.
“And you've spent years punishing everyone younger than you for it.”
Silence.
Madison whispered:
“Grandpa?”
He turned.
She looked scared.
“Did you make Dad boss?”
Richard's face softened.
“I tried.”
“Because he wanted?”
“No.”
He paused.
“Because he should.”
There.
Even Kevin heard it.
Not because Kevin wanted.
Because Richard wanted.
Kevin looked at his father.
“You never asked me either.”
Dad stared.
Kevin continued.
“You told me.”
Silence.
“You told me what I wanted.”
Richard snapped:
“And you wanted it.”
Kevin shook his head.
“At fifteen?”
Silence.
Madison started crying again.
Kevin looked at her.
Then something changed.
He went to her.
Not me.
Not Dad.
He crouched.
For the first time all day, his voice softened without performance.
“I'm sorry.”
Madison stared.
He looked at the mud bucket lying on the grass.
“I shouldn't have let you do that.”
She whispered:
“You laughed.”
His face broke slightly.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He didn't answer.
Because the answer was ugly.
Because humiliating Noah helped his coup.
Because Richard taught him dominance was proof.
Because he wanted a room of adults to think Claire couldn't protect her son.
He looked at me.
Then Noah inside.
“I don't know.”
Not enough.
But more honest.
Dad scoffed.
“Pathetic.”
Kevin stood slowly.
His face changed.
He looked at Richard.
“Say it again.”
Dad smiled cruelly.
“Your sister hits you once and suddenly you're apologizing to children.”
Kevin stared.
There.
The last illusion.
Richard didn't love strength.
He loved control.
May you like
Even over his own son.
Kevin finally understood.
