Chapter 7

I asked Dad one question.

“Who taught Madison what to do?”

He frowned.

“What?”

“The bucket.”

Madison went still.

Kevin looked at his daughter.

She looked at the grass.

Interesting.

I turned.

“Madison.”

Kevin stepped between us.

“She doesn't answer you.”

I stared.

“Move.”

“No.”

Thomas said quietly:

“Kevin.”

He looked around.

Nobody supported him.

Slowly, he moved.

I crouched slightly so Madison didn't have to look up too far.

“Did you plan the mud?”

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

Kevin's face tightened.

“Madison.”

I held up one hand.

He stopped.

“Who gave you the bucket?”

She looked at Dad.

Richard's face changed.

There.

Not Kevin.

Dad.

My stomach tightened.

“Grandpa?”

Madison nodded.

Dad immediately said:

“It was a joke.”

I stood.

“No.”

He continued.

“I told her to make the party memorable.”

“Why?”

“Because Noah gets everything.”

I almost laughed.

“Everything?”

Kevin interrupted.

“Don't act confused.”

I turned.

He continued.

“You gave him a huge cake.”

“It was twelve inches.”

“Private superhero entertainer.”

“Cost $300.”

“Custom shirt.”

“Twenty dollars.”

Kevin looked angry because the numbers were small.

Interesting.

He needed Noah to look spoiled.

Dad said:

“It's not the cost.”

“No.”

I looked at Madison's equipment.

“The cost is apparently reserved for her.”

Silence.

Dad's face hardened.

“This isn't about Madison.”

“It became about Madison when you handed her a bucket and aimed her at my son.”

Madison started crying.

Kevin turned on me.

“There.”

He pointed.

“You happy?”

I stared.

“She told the truth.”

“You made her cry.”

Dad laughed.

“Now suddenly Claire respects children's feelings.”

I looked at him.

“I always did.”

He smiled cruelly.

“Only your own.”

Silence.

Good attack.

Not true.

But designed to provoke.

I didn't give him the satisfaction.

Instead I looked at Madison.

“Why did Grandpa tell you to do it?”

She wiped her face.

“He said…”

Dad snapped:

“Enough.”

I turned.

“You don't control this part anymore.”

He stared.

Madison whispered:

“He said Noah needed to know who's important.”

Silence.

I felt cold.

“What did that mean?”

She looked at Kevin.

“Dad's family is real Morgan family.”

Noah's words.

Not real one.

There it was.

Dad had created it.

I looked at Richard.

“You told a twelve-year-old my son was lesser.”

He crossed his arms.

“I told her lineage matters.”

“He's your grandson.”

“Through you.”

Silence.

The insult came clean.

Through the daughter.

Not son.

Kevin looked away.

He had heard this his whole life.

Probably enjoyed it.

Dad continued.

“Kevin carries the Morgan name forward.”

“So does Noah.”

“Not the same.”

I almost smiled.

“No.”

I held up my signet.

“It isn't.”

Dad's jaw tightened.

I continued.

“Because grandfather gave this to me.”

Silence.

“You thought blood moved through men.”

Nothing.

“He chose competence.”

Dad laughed.

“You think a ring changes biology?”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“It changes who gives orders.”

That ended the debate.

At least for everyone except him.

He stared at me.

Then something ugly appeared.

“You were supposed to marry properly.”

Silence.

Kevin whispered:

“Dad.”

Too late.

“What?”

Richard continued.

“Build alliances.”

I stared.

“Instead you had Noah.”

“With my husband.”

“Who left.”

My jaw tightened.

Noah's father had died? Not specified. Need define. Could be absent/deceased? Better maybe not mention husband. User only gives Claire and son. Could be single mother. Let's not introduce. Dad can say "Instead you built your life around Noah." Safer. Let's adjust: “Instead you built your life around Noah.” Good.

Richard continued.

“Instead you built your life around Noah.”

“Yes.”

“You rejected two family matches.”

“Yes.”

“You made motherhood your excuse.”

“No.”

“My priority.”

He laughed.

“Same weakness.”

I stared.

Then Kevin said:

“You told me the transition was about money.”

I looked at him.

He looked at Dad.

Richard said nothing.

Kevin's face changed.

“What else?”

Dad sighed.

“You weren't ready.”

“For what?”

Silence.

Kevin stepped closer.

“For what?”

Richard looked at both of us.

Then said:

“Once Claire stepped down, Madison was supposed to move into the main Morgan estate.”

Kevin froze.

“What?”

I felt the puzzle shift.

Madison.

Not Kevin.

Dad wasn't building Kevin's future.

He was building his granddaughter's.

The black card.

Tennis club.

Luxury gifts.

Visibility.

Status.

All of it.

Kevin stared.

“Why?”

Dad looked at Madison.

Pride softened his face.

“Because she can still be raised correctly.”

I went cold.

Not Kevin.

Not Noah.

May you like

Madison.

Richard had been using Kevin too.
