Chapter 14

I removed Dad first.
Not from the house.
It wasn't mine.
From Morgan command.
Such as he still had.
He laughed when I told him.
“You can't remove your father.”
“I can remove an adviser.”
His smile disappeared.
“I built this family.”
“No.”
Thomas said it.
We looked at him.
He continued.
“Your father did.”
Richard stared.
Thomas nodded toward me.
“And he gave it to Claire.”
Silence.
I removed Dad's access to every Morgan account.
Every crew meeting.
Every internal decision.
No legal battle.
No paperwork drama.
Just one phone call to the people who already knew whose voice mattered.
Mine.
Richard stared as confirmations came back.
“You planned this.”
“No.”
I looked at the ruined birthday cake.
“You did.”
Kevin stood near Madison.
Quiet.
I turned.
His turn.
“You're out of south operations.”
He laughed weakly.
“For how long?”
“No end date.”
His face tightened.
“Claire.”
“You stole almost a million dollars.”
“I used family resources.”
“No.”
I held up the card.
“You used my authority to imitate your own.”
Silence.
“You paid men under my name.”
Nothing.
“You promised routes you didn't control.”
Nothing.
“You staged my son's humiliation to make me look weak.”
His jaw clenched.
“And you hit me.”
He looked away.
I continued.
“You don't command anyone for me.”
Kevin's voice hardened.
“You'll destroy me.”
“No.”
“I have no income if you freeze access.”
“Get one.”
Several relatives looked down.
Kevin stared.
“You're serious.”
“Yes.”
“What about Madison?”
I looked at her.
“What about her?”
“You'll pull everything.”
“No.”
His face changed.
I continued.
“Her school stays.”
Nothing.
“Her basic club membership stays through the summer.”
Madison's eyes widened.
“The stolen luxury upgrades end.”
Kevin stared.
“Why?”
“Because she's twelve.”
Silence.
“She isn't responsible for what you stole.”
Dad laughed bitterly.
“Soft.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
“Again.”
“Yes.”
“Softness.”
I smiled.
“You keep using that word when you mean boundaries you don't control.”
He stared.
Good.
Then I walked to Madison.
She looked at Noah through the patio glass.
“Can I say sorry?”
“Yes.”
Kevin started:
“Madison—”
I looked at him.
He stopped.
She walked inside.
I watched through the glass.
Noah looked nervous when she approached.
That mattered.
Madison stopped several feet away.
Good.
She didn't touch him.
I couldn't hear everything.
Only pieces.
“Sorry.”
“Cake.”
“Bucket.”
Noah said something.
Madison nodded.
Then she handed him the orange bucket.
He frowned.
She pointed toward the trash.
Noah smiled faintly.
Together they carried it away.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
A beginning.
I turned back.
Kevin watched.
His face twisted.
“She's apologizing because you made her.”
“No.”
I stared.
“She asked.”
Silence.
Dad scoffed.
“She'll regret humiliating herself.”
Kevin turned.
“Stop.”
Richard stared.
Kevin continued.
“Just stop.”
Dad's expression hardened.
“You're choosing Claire.”
“No.”
Kevin looked through the window at Madison.
“For once I'm choosing my daughter.”
Silence.
That hurt Richard.
Good.
Because it was the same choice he had mocked in me.
Dad looked around.
No one stood with him.
Not Kevin.
Not Madison.
Not the crew leaders.
Not Thomas.
Then he looked at me.
“You'll come crawling back.”
I stared.
“For what?”
“When the men realize what you are.”
“What am I?”
His mouth curled.
“A mother pretending to be a boss.”
I almost smiled.
Then Noah ran onto the patio.
Clean shirt.
Chocolate around his mouth.
“Mom!”
I turned immediately.
“Yes?”
He held up a new cupcake.
One candle.
“Madison said wish again.”
My throat tightened.
I crouched.
“You want to?”
He nodded.
Everyone watched.
Dad laughed under his breath.
I ignored him.
Noah closed his eyes.
Made his wish.
Blew out the candle.
The patio stayed silent.
Then he smiled.
No mud.
No laughter.
No one taking the plate away.
I looked at Richard.
He stared.
I stood.
“You wanted everyone to see motherhood make me weak.”
Silence.
May you like
I glanced around at the people who had just watched me take the entire family back from him.
“How did that go?”
