Chapter 11

We returned the bracelet to Helena quietly.

No guests.

No ceremony.

Augusta came.

So did I.

That was enough.

Before the stone was resealed, I held the emeralds one final time.

They were beautiful.

That was part of the problem.

Beautiful things make bad traditions easier to romanticize.

I remembered my mother wearing them at dinners.

I remembered thinking the green made her look powerful.

I never asked whether she felt powerful.

Augusta said:

“She usually felt trapped.”

I looked at her.

“Did Father know?”

“Eventually.”

“What did he do?”

“Nothing for too long.”

Family specialty.

Then Augusta smiled faintly.

“Later, he stopped asking her to wear it.”

Progress arriving late.

Still progress.

I placed the bracelet back where Helena had chosen.

Not because graves need jewelry.

Because the burial itself had been her statement.

End here.

Do not pass this forward.

I finally understood.

When the stone closed, I felt less like I was returning an heirloom and more like I was honoring a boundary nine years late.

Outside, Augusta took my arm.

“Your mother would be furious.”

“At Octavia?”

“At all of us.”

Fair.

“She hated when people made her into a symbol.”

I smiled.

May you like

“Then we should stop.”

Exactly.
