Chapter 12

Sabine lost access to my home.

She called it childish.

I called it accurate.

If someone helps open my mother’s grave without my consent, they do not get dinner invitations.

Simple.

She still had a social life.

Money.

Family.

No exile.

No theatrical punishment.

Just no Winslowe door opening automatically.

That bothered her more than threats would have.

Symbols require rooms.

Remove the room and the symbol weakens.

Her little network dissolved quickly.

Margaret Winslowe remained.

So did two others.

They adapted.

One afternoon Margaret asked:

“What do we call the senior woman now?”

I stared.

“Her name?”

She was not amused.

I was.

Then I understood she was sincere.

For seventy years she had navigated families by titles.

Lady of the house.

Dowager.

Bride.

Widow.

Heir’s wife.

Removing the bracelet also removed a map she understood.

So we built a better one.

Not another title.

Clear responsibilities.

Household director manages staff.

Finance office manages family assistance.

Hosts manage guest lists for their own events.

My spouse, if I ever had one, would have exactly the authority we agreed upon.

Not what jewelry implied.

Margaret disliked it.

Then admitted it was easier.

May you like

Good.

Modernity occasionally wins by being less confusing.
