Chapter 8

The six people Sabine named came to dinner two nights later.

My invitation.

Not hers.

The bracelet remained locked away.

They noticed immediately.

Good.

One elderly cousin, Margaret Winslowe, asked:

“Will Octavia be wearing Helena’s emeralds at the wedding?”

Straight to it.

“No.”

Her expression changed.

“Why?”

“Because Helena was buried wearing them.”

Silence.

Several people looked at Sabine.

Excellent.

Truth rearranges tables quickly.

I continued.

“Someone removed them.”

Margaret’s face went white.

She had expected symbolic succession.

Not grave violation.

Important distinction.

“Sabine?”

The old woman looked genuinely furious.

Sabine stayed composed.

“She understood the necessity.”

“No,” Augusta said.

First time she spoke.

“She understood your pressure.”

That fractured the room.

Two of the six had believed the bracelet was found in storage.

Another thought I had approved removal.

Only one knew the mausoleum would be opened.

A former household manager named Gerard Price.

He had provided the maintenance tool kit.

Not because he wanted theft.

Because Sabine told him I had privately agreed but wanted no public fuss.

Again.

My assumed authority weaponized without my participation.

Gerard looked sick.

“I should have confirmed.”

“Yes.”

No need to humiliate him.

He already understood.

Sabine had built the whole operation on assumptions:

Octavia assumed I had forgotten burial details.

Gerard assumed a future wife carried my permission.

Old relatives assumed the bracelet meant authority.

Lisette assumed nobody would believe her.

Every assumption benefited the person willing to exploit it.

I looked around the table.

“From now on, no symbol speaks for anyone in this house.”

Margaret frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means if Octavia wants authority, I discuss it with her.”

Then:

“If staff need instruction, managers issue it.”

Then:

“If family wants access, they ask.”

No bracelet.

No dead woman interpreting the living.

May you like

Simple.

Apparently revolutionary.
