Chapter 4

The pristine, natural lighting of the ballroom cast sharp, dramatic shadows across Cassian’s angular face. He did not rub his jaw. He did not yell for his bodyguards to intervene. He simply stared at Tristan with the cold, penetrating eyes of an apex predator determining how to dismantle its prey. The silence in the room was absolute, a heavy, suffocating weight pressing down on the hundreds of elite guests watching the internal implosion of the Morelli family.
Tristan, misreading Cassian’s terrifying stillness as hesitation, allowed his arrogance to completely blind his survival instincts. He thought he had the upper hand. He thought the shock of the child's appearance had weakened the Don.
"You think you can just assault my mother over a street rat?" Tristan snarled, adjusting the cuffs of his expensive tailored suit. He bounced lightly on his polished leather shoes, preparing to press his perceived advantage.
Tristan swung again, throwing his entire body weight into a massive, sweeping right hook aimed squarely at Cassian’s jaw.
It was a fatal, catastrophic miscalculation.
Cassian’s reflexes were honed by decades of brutal, unforgiving underworld warfare. He moved with a fluid, lethal elegance. With a subtle, deeply masculine tilt of his broad shoulders, Cassian slipped seamlessly outside the incoming strike. Tristan’s heavy fist sailed harmlessly through the empty air, the sheer momentum pulling the capo entirely off balance and exposing his undefended torso.
Using his cousin's forward momentum against him, Cassian planted his feet firmly on the marble floor. He twisted his hips, engaging the massive strength of his core, and drove one explosive, devastating counterpunch straight across Tristan’s face.
The horrific crunch of shattering bone echoed through the massive ballroom like a gunshot.
The kinetic force of the blow was apocalyptic. It lifted the forty-year-old capo completely off his feet. Tristan spun violently backward, utterly airborne, his arms flailing uselessly as he hurtled across the pristine floor.
He crashed directly into a tall, freestanding ceremonial lantern stand positioned near the edge of the champagne tables.
The collision was spectacular and entirely destructive. The heavy, gilded frame of the lantern stand buckled backward under his weight. Lightweight metal lantern frames toppled in a rapid, chaotic sequence, their glass panes shattering against the marble. Beautiful decorative ribbons, meant to celebrate a union, scattered wildly across the floor in a burst of bright colors. The impact was so severe that plush, folded cushions slid violently from a nearby upholstered bench.

Tristan crashed brutally through the collapsing base of the lantern stand, burying himself in a chaotic ruin of twisted metal, shattered glass, and torn silk ribbons. He hit the ground with a heavy, wet thud and remained completely motionless, knocked unconscious instantly by the single, flawless strike. Blood began to pool on his fair, rosy skin, staining his expensive dress shirt.
No dialogue was spoken. Cassian slowly lowered his fist, his breathing even and perfectly controlled. He smoothed the front of his tailored three-piece suit, standing amidst the bright, vivid colors of the ruined ballroom as an untouchable monument of absolute power.
