Chapter 6

The silence was profound, heavy, and lethal. The bright, cinematic natural light offered no warmth to the terrified onlookers. The elite guests and hardened Mafia capos held their collective breath, witnessing a tectonic, apocalyptic shift in the foundation of the Morelli family. The truth, ugly and undeniably damning, had just been laid bare in the center of the grand ballroom.

Cassian’s powerful, deeply masculine frame remained rigid. His broad shoulders were tense beneath his tailored dark three-piece suit. He slowly, deliberately turned his head.

He looked first at the pink smartwatch on Isla’s tiny wrist, the device that had just shattered a three-year deception. He then shifted his dark, penetrating eyes to Elena. His former fiancée stood trembling in her elegant gown, her fair, rosy cheeks stained with tears of residual terror and profound grief. She looked back at him, her eyes reflecting the years of agonizing heartbreak and fear she had endured, believing the man she loved had ordered her execution.

Finally, Cassian turned his gaze toward the aunt who had raised him, the woman who had stood by his side and watched him search for Elena with a desperate, consuming madness for three long years.

Vivienne was shaking violently. The luxurious pearls around her neck rattled against her collarbone. She took a slow, pathetic step backward, her expensive heels clicking erratically on the marble floor.

"Cassian... please," Vivienne whimpered, her voice a fragile, trembling shadow of her former arrogance. "It is not what it sounds like. I... I can explain."

Cassian did not yell. He did not scream. The sheer, overwhelming rage that flooded his veins manifested in a terrifying, absolute stillness. He took a single, measured step toward his aunt.

"I tore this city apart," Cassian said. His voice was a raspy, guttural whisper that scraped against the silence of the room. He spoke slowly, with controlled, agonizing pauses between his words. "I burned rival safehouses to the ground. I put men in the dirt. Because I thought an enemy had taken her."

"I was protecting you!" Vivienne shrieked, tears of pure panic spilling over her pale cheeks. "She was a distraction! You were about to take over the Commission! You needed to be ruthless, Cassian! A family would have made you weak!"

"You told me she left me," Cassian continued, entirely ignoring her pathetic defense, his cold eyes unblinking. "You sat at my table. You drank my wine. And you watched me mourn."

"She is not worthy of the Morelli name!" Vivienne cried out, pointing a shaking finger at Elena. "I saved this syndicate!"

"I spent three years," Cassian whispered, the devastating, heartbreaking truth dropping the temperature in the room to absolute zero, "believing they abandoned me."

He looked back at the beautiful, terrified woman holding his daughter. The lost years, the stolen moments, the sheer agony of his forced isolation crashed over him. His handsome, rugged face hardened into a mask of pure, unyielding stone. He was no longer just a betrayed man; he was a Mafia Boss who had just identified a traitor in his inner circle.
