Chapter 11

Rocco sent everything.
Not selected files.
Everything.
The recordings that embarrassed him.
The authorizations he signed without reading.
The trust naming him beneficiary.
The supplier diversions.
The forged transfers.
Frank’s hidden loan.
Dominic’s automated disclosure plan.
His attorneys argued for hours.
Rocco listened.
Then refused to retract anything.
“You understand what this does to your reputation?”
“Yes.”
“To the club?”
“Yes.”
“To you personally?”
Rocco turned the signet ring slowly around his finger.
“Yes.”
For the first time, that symbol felt heavy rather than powerful.
Outside, club members had begun hearing rumors.
Several demanded explanations.
Others called Rocco reckless for exposing internal matters.
One longtime member confronted him in the lobby.
“You handle family business privately.”
Rocco looked toward the broken brass emblem still waiting to be repaired.
“That is how we got here.”
The man said nothing.
Dominic remained suspended while attorneys and investigators reviewed the records.
He called Rocco once.
“You could have negotiated.”
Rocco’s voice stayed level.
“That’s what you counted on.”
“I counted on you protecting the family.”
“No.”
Rocco looked through the club window toward the street.
“You counted on me protecting myself.”
Dominic went silent.
That difference mattered.
Rocco then returned to Vance Bakery.
Thomas stood behind the counter with an accountant Rocco had provided.
The redirected supplier money had been restored provisionally while claims were reviewed.
New flour filled the storeroom.
Maeve had new sneakers.
She ran toward Rocco when he entered.
Then stopped.
She looked at his shoes.
“You walking today.”
Rocco almost smiled.
“Yes.”
She studied him.
“Why you had the chair?”
Thomas stiffened.
Rocco crouched.
“I wanted to see how people treated somebody they thought couldn't do anything for them.”
Maeve thought about that.
“Dominic was mean.”
“Yes.”
Rocco did not soften it.
“He was.”
Thomas looked toward him.
“You're really turning over everything?”
“Yes.”
“Even the papers with your name?”
“Yes.”
Thomas’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?”
Rocco’s answer came slowly.
“Because if my name helped scare you, then my name doesn't get special protection from the truth.”
Thomas stared at him.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
When he hung up, he looked at Rocco.
“The bank just called.”
Rocco stood.
Thomas swallowed.
May you like
“They say North Crest filed foreclosure papers against the bakery yesterday.”
Dominic’s last move had already been set in motion before Rocco removed his badge.
