Chapter 9

Rocco read the trust agreement three times.
His own name remained there.
Sole beneficiary.
Dominic watched quietly from across the room.
Rocco finally looked up.
“You put everything in my name.”
Dominic shook his head.
“I put it where family assets belong.”
“Without telling me.”
“You would've stopped me.”
“Yes.”
Dominic gave a thin smile.
“Exactly.”
Samuel examined the trust.
The signatures establishing it were valid.
The trust itself dated back twelve years.
Rocco remembered creating it for long-term club property.
Dominic had not fabricated the structure.
He had used an existing one.
Every property pressured away from a merchant had eventually landed inside a vehicle whose ultimate beneficiary was Rocco.
Every dollar extracted from surrounding businesses had increased the value of assets legally connected to him.
Rocco understood the danger immediately.
On paper, Dominic could argue he had acted for his uncle.
Perhaps recklessly.
Perhaps illegally.
But not independently.
Rocco would appear to be the man who gained the most.
Dominic’s breathing steadied as he watched the realization spread.
“You wanted the district.”
Rocco stared at him.
“I wanted legitimate acquisitions.”
“Can you prove that to everyone who heard those recordings?”
Rocco’s eyes narrowed.
Dominic continued.
“To Thomas Vance? To the closed florist? To prosecutors if it goes there? To the press if somebody leaks it?”
His confidence was returning.
Not loud.
Not arrogant.
Worse.
Controlled.
He had been waiting for this moment.
Rocco lowered his voice.
“What do you want?”
Dominic’s eyes flickered.
“Recognition.”
“For what?”
“For keeping this place alive while everybody else was afraid to tell you it was dying.”
Rocco looked at the loan papers.
Dominic continued.
“I want my position restored.”
“No.”
“Then every document goes where documents go.”
Rocco’s face did not change.
Dominic leaned closer.
“And your name sits at the top of all of them.”
There it was.
The real power move.
Dominic had not merely built a redevelopment project.
He had built a shield.
If Rocco protected him, Dominic remained powerful.
If Rocco destroyed him, Rocco risked appearing to be the mastermind who benefited from everything.
Maeve’s father could accuse Dominic.
Dominic could point upward.
Rocco had spent a lifetime making his name powerful enough that people obeyed without seeing him.
Now his nephew had turned that same name into a chain around his neck.
Then Samuel spoke from the corner.
“There’s one more file.”
Dominic’s expression changed.
Rocco noticed.
Samuel held up a scheduled email found in Dominic’s club account.
Recipients included lawyers, journalists, regulators and three rival board members.
