Chapter 8

Carmine made the decision on Monday morning.

Claire warned him what it would cost.

“If you petition to remove Rosanna as trustee before the audit is complete, every current beneficiary may experience administrative disruption.”

“How long?”

“Temporary payments can continue through an independent fiduciary, but special requests will slow down.”

“Do it.”

“There’s more.”

“I know there’s more.”

“The court filing will make portions of the dispute public.”

Carmine said nothing.

“Families who accepted assistance may feel exposed.”

“We redact medical information.”

“We can request it.”

“Do it.”

“Rosanna will claim you are destroying a trust your father created.”

Carmine leaned back.

“My father hid the original records in a bank box and hid the key where she couldn’t find it.”

Claire watched him.

“That still doesn’t tell us why.”

“No.”

Carmine looked at the spreadsheet.

“But I’m done allowing uncertainty to become her permission.”

He authorized the petition.

He also asked for a temporary independent trustee, a forensic review of all discretionary distributions for fifteen years, and preservation of family-council records.

That was the irreversible step.

The Lucchesis had handled welfare internally for generations.

Now an outside fiduciary would decide whether a widow received emergency rent assistance.

The family hated it.

Several capos came to Carmine together.

“You’re putting our people in front of strangers.”

“I’m putting the money in front of people who don’t need your vote.”

One man stood.

“My son went through rehab because of that fund.”

“Then the fund should survive Rosanna.”

“You don’t understand what she did for us.”

Carmine looked at him.

“I’m beginning to.”

The man went silent.

That evening Rosanna arrived at the estate without permission.

Security stopped her at the front entrance.

Carmine went outside.

Snow had begun falling.

“You removed me,” she said.

“Temporarily.”

“From my own brother’s trust.”

“His trust was not your property.”

“I kept those families alive.”

“And now somebody else will keep doing it without asking how they vote.”

Her face hardened.

“You think you’re cleaner than the people who built this family.”

“No.”

Carmine shook his head.

“I think Elliot is four.”

Rosanna looked confused.

“He watched you burn something his grandfather gave him because you wanted what might be inside.”

“That has nothing to do with the trust.”

“It has everything to do with how far you decided you were allowed to go.”

For the first time, Rosanna had no answer.

Carmine went back inside.

The next morning the court appointed an independent interim trustee.

Rosanna’s fourteen-year control ended at 9:43 a.m.
