Chapter 1

My daughter begged me not to leave her in her own bedroom.
That was the moment Ryan Cole stopped being my son-in-law.
I had come to the apartment carrying a pink teddy bear.
No warning.
No bodyguard walking directly beside me.
Just a father returning early with a gift for his first granddaughter.
Then I passed the open bedroom door.
Ryan had Emily pinned against the mattress by one wrist.
His other hand locked around her upper arm.
He shoved her backward.
Linda immediately pulled the blanket over Emily’s arms.
“Keep crying,” Ryan said coldly. “Nobody’s coming.”
I stopped.
The gift bag dropped.
The teddy bear rolled across the floor.
Ryan turned.
Emily did too.
“Daddy…”
I crossed the room.
Pulled the blanket away.
Finger-shaped bruises circled both arms.
Another dark mark sat dangerously close to her seven-month-pregnant belly.
Emily grabbed my hand.
“Please don’t leave me here.”
Something inside me became very quiet.
Linda stepped between us.
She grabbed the teddy bear from the floor and threw it into my chest.
“Take this worthless gift and get out of my house.”
Ryan shoved me.
Then punched first.
I took the glancing hit.
He swung again.
This time I slipped outside it and hit him once.
He crashed backward into the grandfather clock.
Linda lunged toward Emily.
I intercepted her.
One slap.
One kick.
She went backward through the nursery-book display.
Books and baby gifts scattered.
Then something small struck the floor.
Brass.
A key.
Emily stared at it.
Not Linda.
The key.
I picked it up.
Emily weakly pointed toward the end of the hallway.
A locked bedroom door.
I looked at Linda.
“Tell me what that key opens.”
Her face went pale.
Ryan groaned beneath the tilted clock.
Linda whispered:
“Nothing.”
Emily started shaking.
Then she said something that made Linda close her eyes.
May you like
“She locks me in there when Ryan gets angry.”
And suddenly the bruises were no longer the only thing I needed explained.
